How to keep the big no soda New Years resolution? Help

So I'm not overweight by any means and drink water mostly. But when holidays party family events etc. come around and vacation which we go in usually one or two a year come around I cave and drink soda I want 2014 to be a fresh start I want my diet fitness and health to be a top goal. But I always cave with soda only during these events.

How do I keep my new years resolution to no soda? Please help remember I only have soda during these events but how do I say no?

When I see everyone else drinking it during events I feel like I need to so I cave any help?

I'm 20 I don't drink alcohols don't smoke or dip. Either

 I drink 4-5 cans of diet soda a day and I haven't turned into a mutant yet  If you're concerned about the calories in regular soda then just drink diet. But, if you're only drinking it a few times a year then regular isn't going to do any harm, just factor it into your calorie allotment and enjoy!
  • Thanks and FYI diet soda bad for you also just because it says 0 calories does not mean it is zero calories. But thanks

a few sodas a year is nothing to really worry about- as long as you factor them into your calorie allotment you should be good. Everyone deserves a treat now and then. I treat myself with diet soda about once or twice a week (which is great improvement for me, I was usually drinking 3-4 sodas a day!)

Wow, where did you hear that? I drink almost a liter of coke zero a day, and I still haven't gotten fat off of it.

You open your mouth, and by using a combination of your tounge, teeth and lips along with your vocal chords emit the word "no."

    It's that easy.

Is your family pushing the soda or something? Just take a bottle of water with you.

Not like having a soda once in awhile will kill your efforts, but if you REALLY want to keep from drinking it, then buck up and don't. It's either you do or you don't. There's no magical saying or ritual to do.

Find something to replace it with. I lug around my own seltzer water to family events - they laugh at me but it keeps me out of the soda. :)

You'd have to find some good peer reviewed clinical evidence to back this.

You'll actually be more successful in the long run if you allow yourself a "treat" now and then of something you really enjoy. It certainly won't do you any harm to have one a few times a year. Regular soda has a lot of sugar, so if you want to avoid that and the sugar crash later, have a diet soda. The sweeteners in them are really only considered harmful in VERY high amounts, so if you have only one now and then, it won't hurt you.
Diet sodas can have calories in them. If you look on a bottle of diet mountain dew, it says right on the bottle that there are 10 calories per serving in it. However, 10 calories is pretty minimal and I'd think any calorie count would have room for 10 calories in it.

Bring a water bottle with u. I see nothing wrong with soda a few times a yr. Also just dont let it in your house. Once its gone forma few weeks you will find your cravings will go down. I prefer chocolate for my treats...if u like soda nothing wrong with indulging a little bit...

Watet bottle I have 3. One I keep in my car. One for the gym and one for home. ;)

Use club soda with a splash of orange juice and add a lemon twist so it looks like a pretty drink

I usually have a bottle of soda water and then add something like a 1/4 cup of cranberry juice or something. Just enough to give it some flavor and a heck of a lot less calories.

I'm pretty sure OP is asking for advice on how to eliminate soda during the holiday season... Not whether or not diet soda is bad for you, or whether or not a few sodas are okay in moderation.

I can relate to this in the form of sugar or alcohol. I, too, like to avoid sweets/alcohol and the best way I've found for ME to do this is to eliminate them completely. After a few days, or weeks, it becomes easier to say no. It's hard for me to avoid it if I have it every once in a while.

I never drink soda anymore (unless it's the only option), but basically I just gave it up by vowing to drink more water. Since I started drinking water all day, I no longer feel the need/want to drink soda.

  • Drink seltzer water or just say no.

Pretty sure they mean it can have trace amounts of calories which means, per the FDA, that the label can say "zero calories". Same goes for labels that boast "No Trans Fats!" They could have such a minimal amount that they're allowed to say it has none.

Hehe, my husband says this same thing. It gives him pretty bad indigestion, though.

Some people drink soda for the caffeine and find it hard to quit because they go through the caffeine withdrawls.

Switch to diet. Or set a limit, say no more than one a day. Cutting out a whole food item only makes me want it more, so why set yourself up for failure? And log those calories, if course.

Just ask for water, or tea, or sparkling water, nobody will think it's weird for you to turn down soda, at gatherings I often turn down drinks completely because I'm not thirsty.
