Building muscle with workout videos?

I know that building muscle, cardio, and a calorie deficit is how you lose weight. I am doing pretty well so far and have lost 33 pounds but I am only doing cardio a few days a week and eating a caloric deficit. I would like to incorporate more muscle building into my workouts but can't afford a gym membership. So my question is will workout videos like Brazil Butt Lift or P90X work to build muscle or are they just more cardio? I have been doing squats, lunges, crunches, planks, and push ups do these count towards building muscle as well? Sorry for the noob question but I am new to the workout scene and have no clue what to do with weights.

Those are just more cardio for the most part. If you can't get into a weight room and lift weight I would suggest a good bodyweight resistance routine...look into something like "You are Your Own Gym" or "Convict Conditioning"

If you're eating at a deficit, resistance training will help you preserve the muscle mass you currently have...you lose muscle mass along with fat when you diet and don't do resistance work and get enough protein. You cannot, however, build any substantial new muscle in a calorie deficit. A surplus of energy is necessary to be catabolic...whether you are fat catabolic or muscle catabolic, a surplus of calories is required.

Thank you that was very informative! I still have a lot to lose and don't want to be flabby at the end of my weight loss goals.

This pretty much answers it. Keep doing what you're doing and introduce some sort of strength training into your fitness routine. Make sure you're eating enough protein as well. That together will help you maintain your muscle mass while you lose weight.

I've recently started adding FitnessBlender's Strength Training videos into my workouts and it's challenging I've only done it twice so far but it's definitely helping me become fitter, no differences can be observed yet as I'm not doing it everyday but will be doing it x3 per week when I'm back at University.

If you're looking for videos as guides, Bob Harper makes some strength training vids, I forget the name of them but all his DVDs are pretty cheap, I usually find them at target.

Most of his DVDs are circuit training (cardio + strength)....,.but this is a breakdown of various titles

They aren't the best, but if you do heavier weight something like P90x would be OK - Brazil butt lift not so much. The moves in P90x are legit - you just need to do them with heavier dumbbells.

BB has a write up on this - http://www.beachbody.com/product/p90xnl_011.do#

If you have the ability to do a barbell program, like Stronglifts, you'll be better off.

    Good luck!

I'm a big fan of Jillian Michaels' circuit training videos. Those are the only videos I've used and I don't think anyone would say I was flabby :-) I started with the 30 Day Shred and moved through her videos from there. I've never been to the gym (yet!) and have lost 60 pounds.

Don't let not being able to go to the gym keep you from accomplishing what you desire. I'm sure besides Jillian, there are other videos--I've just never used them :-)

    Good luck with your goals!
