Abs frustration

So for the last month I have been having this issue (probably mental). I do not feel my abs (especially lower) engaging as I work them and I do not feel sore the next day either. I'm being very careful in regard to form as I do not want to hurt my back. I have been working them like crazy with my trainer and he keeps throwing more at me but I still don't feel anything. It's very frustrating in the past I would be sore for days after some of these workouts but lately nothing. I know you don't have to feel sore to have a good workout but I just don't feel like I am making any progress. Yes I can tighten them and feel (and see) them (under my loose skin, an issue for a different post).

Soreness is no indication of the amount of work done or not done, it just occurs when your body is adapting to new stress. All your lack of soreness means is that you're getting conditioned for the workouts you're doing, which is absolutely not a bad thing.

Usually soreness goes away to some extent, if not completely, with time.

For instance, squats used to make me sore as hell. Now I squat twice the weight I was doing before, and aside from being tired, 0% soreness. It just goes away with time.

What kind of progress are you expecting? Ab exercises don't target ab fat, so if that's your goal, you're going about it the wrong way.
