I just want to hit things

So hubby got me a heavy bag for Christmas. I have no idea what to do with it. I`ve had some fun punching at it. Bought some gloves but I didn`t really know what I needed. Every time I hit the bag with them on it looks like small blood vessels inbetween my fingers break. Looks ugly but it does not hurt.
I tried to do some research. So far the only thing I have decided is that I need to buy some wraps to protect my wrists and that would probably fix the other problem. I have not found a lot of information online. I think I need to buy a pair of weighted gloves but I dont really want to buy a lot more until I have some idea what I am looking for.
Why did I get it then? Sometimes when I am mad I say I wish I could just punch something. Hopefully the bag will provide exercise and an opportunity to let some stress/anger go.
So., how does a girl that knows nothing about it learn to punch the crap out of bag in the garage?
Where do I start? What do I need? And how do I not hurt myself?
Please dont think any advice you have is too basic, I know absolutely nothing.
Thanks!!!

I used to go to a boxing gym - loved it! I do prefer hitting pads to a bag though...
I have gloves, not weighted, and wraps - they protected my hands and I never had issues with bruising. I did have wrist issues though!
can you find somewhere to have a couple of classes? is there a pt with boxing coaching experience who can come to you?0 -
Try looking up YouTube videos on the subject of heavy punching bags for beginners or hanging punching bags for beginners.0

Yeah, I would totally look for some how to videos on You Tube.
Good luck! I admire you for wanting to hit things and then actually DOING it.

I would just imagine it was a banker or a politician (Any colour as they are all lying manipulative scoundrels) and just start swinging. I think I would get into it very easily :-)

Hitting things is great for stress! I wish I had a heavy bag!!
You should defnitely get a pair of gloves to protect your hands and wrists. I was kickboxing (until November when I tore my ACL) and would get sore wrists if I wasn't wrapping them. Any pair of gloves will do if you're just punching a bag so you don't need to invest too much money into it. If you want to use the gloves for a boxing or kickboxing class later, I would recomend a 12oz or 16oz size. I have a 12oz pair for classes but prefer more padding (16oz) when I'm sparring.
Watch some videos about some basic punches. Look up 'jab', 'cross', 'hook'. You can also do some kicks on the bag for fun. Look up Muay Thai basics on Youtube.
Have fun!! Punching things is great!!0 -

Hahaha! Well I have no problem getting into it. I'm just afraid I'm going to cause an injury going at it like a rabid raccoon with no form or direction. Was hoping to find some instruction online or maybe a recommendation for a DVD. May need to find an actual live person to help though :-)0 -

First with what you need, I would definitely get wraps and learn to properly wrap your hands. It is completely possible to bruise and even fracture your hand otherwise, and I know this from personal experience sadly. I would then look into finding out proper boxing techniques, there are actually some decent youtube videos out there, but I learned when I was with my ex-husband.
You'll be happy with your heavy bag lol, I *wish* I had somewhere stable enough to hang one these days...I love it!0 -
Sounds like you have a smart husband .. you punch the bag not him. I might have to get one for my wife. Wait .. thinking this through ... if she gets good at hitting the bag .. I don't like where this is headed.0

Search Amazon for "Krav Maga basic combatives DVD"
Plenty of good, solid technique there for beating the crap out of a bag. I think you'll like it.0 -
Update: I bought wraps today and 12 oz gloves (white not pink!). Watched a YouTube video last night about how to do the wrap, was so excited as soon as I walked out of the store I wrapped my left hand from memory. I think I did it right but I'll watch again and do it step by step to make sure. It felt awesome!
So as soon as I got home I wrapped both hands and tried on the new gloves and they feel awesome! Didn't have time to do much because I had to leave again right away but I'm looking forward to spending some time with the bag tomorrow!
This is sooo much fun :-). I never get excited about exercise, it's always a chore. I'm so excited I found something I like.0
