Aerobics is just a type of cardio.

Cardio as implied by it's name works the heart and related systems in the body. It is related to specific health benefits depending on intensity. Generally the benefits are related to heart health. In regards to weight loss it helps to create a larger calorie deficit.
You should be aware higher intensity cardio generally is more beneficial AND can be done in shorter periods of time.

Strength benefits other parts of the body generally related to bone and muscle health. When in a weight loss phase your body consumes fat AND muscle. Strength training helps to retain as much muscle as possible.

Depending on your goals it is a good idea to incorporate both into your lifestyle. If you are just looking to begin some sort of healthier lifestyle, you can always start with walking.

I would just add to the above that strength training doesn't need weights or a gym. Strength can be increased and muscle mass can be preserved with bodyweight exercises including bodyweight squats, push-ups and chin-ups. If you can't do even one chin-up you can pass a resistance band over the pull-up bar and drop you knee or foot into it to help reduce the weight you are pulling.

Bodyweight is highly under-rated when looking at gaining strength and maintaining muscle mass and is open to anyone to do - and it's fun!
