Calorie Burn from workouts

Im seeing a lot of my friends are posting workout such as 90 minutes walking with over 1000 calorie burns and 30 minute workouts with 500 calorie burns. Is this even possible? I walk 3.5 uphill for 30 minutes and get roughly 200 calories burned and sometime I feel like that may be to much. If its possible how do I do that?

Its not totally impossible, however, for the majority, it is unlikely.

The two factors that determine calorie burn are weight and intensity. Someone who has a lot of extra weight will burn more calories than someone who is average weight. Working at a higher intensity will also burn calories faster, but true higher intensity workouts are not possible to continue for upwards of an hour or more.

Some of these people will tell you they are using HRMs. There are a number of factors that can affect the accuracy of them, unfortunately, many people blindly believe they are very accurate. Intervals, for example, will give you an inflated burn. HRMs are designed to estimate calories during steady state cardio.

I use a HRM. I walk/run 65 min on a treadmill. I alternate 1min run at 5.5mph and 1.30 walking at 4.1 mph. I burn anywhere between 550-650 calories. I'm 5'6, 37, and weigh 185. The estimate on the treadmill is usually 100-150 calories higher than my HRM.
