Free Weight Investment

So, I have been advised by numerous people that free weights are more effective than the weight machines. Makes sense to me because of having to use all the small stabalization muscles that free weights require.
And as a new dad, I would rather spend my time at home, and it is often required due to my wife and I both working in the Emergency/911 fields with some CRAZY work schedules that hinder a solid gym commitment. So, I have decided to get as much gym equipment as I can for home use. But my problem is that we have VERY limited room/space for 10,000 different items.
--Has anyone used/purchased the Bowflex Select Tech Free Weights?
--Are they affective?
--Are they worth the price tag??
They seem like a smart idea. But I'm skeptical.
I have lost 125 pounds and I am ready to take my fitness to the next level with some weight training. I already have a tread mill and BowFlex Tread Climber for cardio, a exercise ball for some core exercise... but really wanting to add weights to increase my muscle some. Not going for the Arnold look, but more defined than what I have been left with after a large weight loss.
Any help, info, tips, advice etc would be greatly appreciated!

Seems like instead of this being a few weight question as advertised it's actually a bowflex DB question but I'll take a shot anyway. You didn't say how much space you have but really all you need is a sturdy bench and a small rack or stands such as these

That would get you well in your way. DBs are great, but optional (and expensive). Find a spot for a chin up bar and get some bands and you're pretty much there
