Question: Carbs vs. sugar in MFP tracking

So, when we're tracking carbs, fibre and sugar, what are the units and how do they add up.
I know that sugar is a type of carb, and so is fiber. So I thought maybe carbs = fiber + sugar, but that doesn't even remotely add up. So, what is the deal here?

My off-the-cuff thought is that the difference between the total carbs and the fiber + sugar is the amount complex carbs that eventually get broken down into glucose.0

Net carbs are the adjustments made for fiber and sugar alcohol content.
Total carbs - fiber - (sugar alcohols/2) = net carbs0
