The book is blank, waiting for you to write the words. The first chapter is called New Year's Day.

My name is David. I'm a college English teacher and 48 years old.

In August I was diagnosed with hypertension and was suffering from chest pains. My doctor told me plainly that I was obese and that I needed to lose weight. I'm tall and have always been told that I 'could carry it'. Well, I got tired of carrying it.

I've been tracking my diet, exercise and progress with MFP since then and I have lost 30 lbs so far.

I'm really fussy about what foods go into the machine now and gave up alcohol completely because it was sabotaging my weight loss (and I don't have time for things that won't advance my goals). I might have a celebratory glass of champagne after 10 more pounds, which is my first major goal, but I don't think I'm going to be Facebook friends with booze any more.

My goal is to get lean - then I'm going to get mean.

I won't say 'good luck' with your goals - it takes more than that. I will wish you all the best with your grit, determination, discipline and your failures too.

'Success is not final, failure is not fatal' - Winston Churchill
