Dr. Oz 3 day Detox Cleanse

Hello everybody :)

I have been a member of MFP for a few years, but have not been logging the past 4 months or so. I am ready to get back in the swing of things!

I am considering doing the Dr. Oz 3 day Detox Cleanse

I have never done a cleanse before, but have always been curious about them. I am coming off of a nasty flu virus and thought the cleanse would be a good way to clear residual OTC meds out of my system and kick start my fitness goals. (I have been neglecting my workout routine for a few months).

Has anyone done this cleanse before? Do they do more harm than good? I can never seem to find a straight answer when I research this topic.

Any feedback is appreciated :)

In, before the barrage of Dr Oz gifs gets going...

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRbaJAJp7-p69OOnL7B1uMWsR016yOxH14P_Ztz1MxEf1AQjQfdug

Seriously.... Dr Oz, promotes some new miracle every day on his show. How many weight loss miracles do we need? One, you'd think would be enough... if it worked.

I had a quick look at the link, and it looks like not alot of calories per day, unless I missed something. I've never done the cleanse before, so I can't give first hand experience.... but as for doing more harm than good? I doubt it would do you any harm. But, it's not likely to do you any long-term good.

My question to you is.... what would your plan be for day 4, and beyond?

Dr Oz isn't a quack... He just sold out. He knows what he's selling doesn't really work, but he makes money, so he keeps doing it.

I don't believe anything Dr Oz advertises or supports. He changes his mind TOO often. so, i wouldn't do any cleanse that he endorses.

Selling what he knows doesn't really work makes him a quack. I get spam from Dr. Oz, so that tells you something, too.

Unless you are addicted to alcohol or heroin, or require kidney dialysis, there is no need for detox.

    Stop the madness.

(Yes, I posted this somewhere else. I am going to copy and paste this on every detox thread I come across for the next month.)

Dr. Oz is now just a front for the big corporations. He is no longer credible. Stay away.

  • A 3 day detox is effective as long as you have realistic expectations. It's good if you've been eating a lot of refined foods or sugar and need to give your body a break or need to stop intense sugar/grease/carb cravings - common after the holiday season. As for Day 4 and on - eat healthy and see if this helped you jump start that. Beyond that, listen to your body and be safe.

Start logging. Weigh and measure your intake. Stay at a caloric deficit. Exercise. Keep it simple.

Your body does a fine job all on it's own "detoxing". What do you think your kidneys and liver are for? Christmas decoration? Let them do their jobs....they are great at it.

Tis the season - get ready for more like this as the New Year's Resolutioners arrive en masse in the coming weeks.

I like smoothies and drink them often - but not for every meal of the day! :noway:

This is not practical or sustainable, and it's not going to "detox" or "reset" your body.

Eat regular food. Hit your calorie and macro goals. Exercise. Drink water. Take rest days. Get good sleep.

I'm NOT busting on ya! but have seen several posts here on this topic. Below is the best response I have seen to cleanses yet.

From Harvard Medical school about cleansing and detoxes.....

    "The body’s own detox system

We tend to forget that the body is equipped with a detoxification system of its own, which includes the following:

The skin. The main function of the body’s largest organ is to provide a barrier against harmful substances, from bacteria and viruses to heavy metals and chemical toxins.

The respiratory system. Fine hairs inside the nose trap dirt and other large particles that may be inhaled. Smaller particles that make it to the lungs are expelled from the airways in mucus.

The immune system. This exquisitely orchestrated network of cells and molecules is designed to recognize foreign substances and eliminate them from the body.

The intestines. Peyer’s patches — lymph nodes in the small intestine — screen out parasites and other foreign substances before nutrients are absorbed into the blood from the colon.

The liver. Acting as the body’s principal filter, the liver produces a family of proteins called metallothioneins. Metallothioneins neutralize harmful metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury to prepare for their elimination from the body. Liver cells also produce groups of enzymes that regulate the metabolism of drugs and are an important part of the body’s defense against harmful chemicals and other toxins.

The kidneys. The fact that urine tests are used to screen for drugs and toxins is a testament to the kidneys' remarkable efficiency in filtering out waste substances and moving them out of the body."

I DO understand "Falling off the wagon" and wanting to kickstart yourself back into gear. Just get in a great workout, start sweating again, start eating "right" (eating "right" could start a WHOLE other storm on here) just do what you were doing before. It sucks to start again but once you do it is AWESOME!

Cleanses are unnecessary!! Your body does a fab job at cleansing itself. Especially if you are coming off being sick...please eat healthy and sensibly. Cleanses don't 'kick start' your body...if anything they'll mess you up.

I know everyone here is telling you not to cleanse and I'm going to add to it. Sorry :indifferent: I actually did a cleanse last February and it made me sick for over a week. Definately not worth the money! Not worth what it may do to your body! Just eat healthy and clean as best you can and work out so you have a calorie deficit. That's the trick!
