Protien Shake Q

HI,
Quick Question about those protien shake things....
I purchased some of that muscle milk and I really like it... been trying really hard to eat right and excersise..although everyday isn't a good day I'm trying....Since August first I've been to the gym 15 times...anyway.....
Q:
When are you suppost to have the muscle milk?
Onlyl after excersising?
During exersise?
Anytime?
Is there a better time than other times to have it?
Can you have it if your just hungry, like for a snack, if you can't work out that day?
This stuff isn't that cheap...so I don't want to "waste" it.
I see a lot of people at the gym with colored liquid in their water bottles...(protien shakes I"m guessing).. I feel like I need water more when I'm working out (?) I went to the gym last night but I can't go today... can I have some of that muscle milk, or would I be waisting the positive effects?
Thanks for any info! I'm very new to understanding any of this protien stuff.

Drink water while you're exercising (sports drinks ONLY if you're doing 60 min or more) then drink the protein shake within 30 min to an hour of working out.
I also drink a serving right before I work out but that's because working out on an empty stomach makes me very sick and muscle milk is far better than a slimfast.0 -
Oh, also sometimes if I'm running around a lot (Mon - Wed are 18 hour days for me) I use it as a meal supplement. Better something than nothing.0

Its mainly for after exercising, but it could be used a snack when you need calories and protein0

You can have them anytime but the most important time to take in protein is right after (within a half hour or so) of a workout.0

I take mine pretty much everyday, don't forget you build your muscle out of the gym so when your resting is when your body needs protein the most.
Also, as long as your not going overboard with it, it's fine to take it as a 'snack' (it is very filling after all!) but as everyone else says, most important after workout
Personally i have one in the morning mixed with porridge oats (more slow releasing this way)
One scoop with water immediately after a workout
One before bed with some oats mixed in (slower releasing again, this one i don't always take - depends on my calorie count at the end of the day)
What protein shake exactly do you take? you say it's expensve, often there is little to no difference between well known brands and other alternatives, maybe we could help you save some money?0 -
I use syntha - 6
I usually take it as a meal replacement....when I use it for a meal replacement I add milk.
I was a pre trainer drink - N Xlode and it gives you loads of energy and improves your performance which means more cal burn. (only 25 cals a scoop and no sugar)
My husband I are are wanting to get lean dessert or cell mass as a post workout.0 -
I've been making shakes with Designer Whey (I use strawberry). I make one with dinner, and I work out right before dinnertime. It helps with repairing the muscles and it gets me to my protein goal for the day.0

I purchased the Muscle Milk (Chocolate) in the 4 pack yesterday.. they were $7 something (on sale). The single bottles are $3 each.
I saw the powdered Muscle Milk stuff at Target as well, it was like $14 for a big container...but, I'm chicken to go that route.. does it taste the same if you mix it yourself? I really like the pre-mixed bottles that you just shake and slurp, esp. when they are nice and cold. Of course, I haven't even tried them room temp.
I once purchased the biggest looser fruit protien mix (powdered stuff) and it was HORRIBLE. I used on pack and the rest have been collecting dust on the shelf. That was $10 for like 12 of them. (Yeah, I'm cheap, lol) Since that powder was so nasty, I'm hessitant to get the muscle milk powder.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!0 -
I'm really hooked on my protein shake. I get this stuff called "chocolate protein" but it's not available many places. I started with it when I found it really cheap somewhere. Anyway, I take 2 scoops of that in the blender with some spinach leaves (honestly you don't taste them at all), some frozen fruit and a little flaxseed. It says to mix it with 8 oz water but I mix it with 16 oz and it still tastes great...just lasts longer I make it right after my a.m. workout and then sip it all a.m. until lunchtime pretty much. I do the same thing around 3 for my afternoon snack. So, I guess I use it post-workout but also as a snack replacement. It's very filling because it also has 5 g fiber.
Anyway, just another idea of how to use it
Sometimes if I don't workout (rest day) and don't eat breakfast so early I skip the a.m. one... but when I work out I eat breakfast at 5 and figure I really need the snack and more importantly the protein post-workout. I've read within 30 minutes of the workout is ideal.0 -
my husband told me the cheaper stuff are, it won't taste really good.
So try not to be cheap! I like to go cheap also
Go to GNC they might be having their buy one get one half off sale going on still - If yo uhave access to a military post, GNC on military posts are cheaper than other GNC's0 -
Rubbish! your paying for the brand name. The stuff i use has just as good of an amino acid profile and amount of protein in per serving as some of the branded products, tastes nicer and is half of the price0

I get the big muscle milk whey protein mix in a bag from Costco. It's thirty bucks for... a lot. I should check exactly how many servings but it's been two weeks and I go through three scoops a day and it's not even halfway gone!0
