Porridge - Making me feel fat and bloated

Hi All,

Hope everyone is enjoying the festive period!

I've just realised that eating porridge is making me feel really fat and bloated - I know it sounds a bit daft to 'suddenly realise' but I've been eating porridge for breakfast for months because every healthy meal plan will tell you to (and I know that it releases energy slowly making you feel fuller for longer, etc) so I just assumed that it was doing me good.

However, I've just been home for Xmas for a week and had toast or an English muffin every morning and I couldn't believe the difference. I didn't consume any more calories than I normally would (I didn't go overboard this year!) and I honestly felt so much less bloated and slimmer and now I've come home, 3 days of porridge has made me feel huge again and my clothes are tighter.

Has anyone else experienced this? I guess I've learnt that you should listen to your body rather than consume what you think is good for you but its just a bit frustrating to realise this now!

    Low GI? Slow digestion? Intolerance to gluten (unless you are 100% sure it is GF)?
    Maybe switching to a faster moving carb (banana for example) and keep your oats or porridge for later on during the day once your digesting system / metabolism has woken up?
    I have oats as a pre-workout. 1.5 hours before - feel full on the spot but fine when i start training.

    Maybe an intolerance to the dairy?
  • I feel the same. For one it doesn't really fill me up for long (I am hungry one hour after) and it makes me feel bloated. I just stopped eating it, except in really small quantities.

    I've been suffering with this too!
    I also only noticed over the Christmas period. It seems to happen when I eat porridge or weetabix. Ive swtiched to Corn Flakes and it has made the world of difference, although I have no idea why!

    It doesn't make me bloated but it gives me heartburn. Which is odd because the only other things that do that are really high fat - fried chicken, curry, Domino's pizza to name a few.
