My Filling Salad Combination

I think it's a general concept that when you're eating well, you should eat a lot of salad. Now we know salad is great for you, but let's be honest, it can be dull.

However I have my own little concoction that I think tastes great, adds a bit of protein, fills you up and still keep the calories low.

I make this in a big dinner plate sized bowl, so there is plenty of it.

Half fill the bowl with iceberg lettuce (you can use any green leaves, I'm just boring and really like iceberg). Approximately 1/3 a whole lettuce I'd say.
Chop up half a red pepper (again, yellow and green are fine, I just prefer the sweetness/crispness of red)
Chop up 2 or 3 slices of ham in to postage stamp squares.
Chop up 50g of salad cheese (feta). Again I do squares about the same size as the ham.
Personal taste - I add about 10 silver skin pickled onions. Adds some tang!
Then finally, stick a boiled egg on top. Doesn't matter if runny or not. I prefer hard, but runny could act like a dressing.
Cover the whole bowl in black pepper.

And that's it! Simple. Loads of flavor with no unhealthy dressing. It really fills you up, tastes great, and only approx 270 calories! Winner!

    Thank you!

    Sounds yummy!
  • Thank you, it sounds great. I'd probably make my own olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing. That just adds a healthy oil and I love how I can add some no calorie herbs to that giving it just a bit more of a tangy bite.
  • Sounds good! :drinker:

    yum!
  • I just wanted to point out that your general premise is not actually accurate at all-- "when you're eating well, you should eat a lot of salad. Now we know salad is great for you..." There is nothing magical about salad--you could just as easily make a chicken breast w/ a tsp of olive oil, steamed veggies, and a small baked potato for nearly the same number of calories. Also, salad can be quite calorie dense and provide few nutrients relative to the caloric content if made with lots of additions that do little to increase its nutritional content. So, my point is that salad CAN BE a great meal choice but it can also be a poor choice and in either case it's not a necessary component of eating well.

Being a horrific pedant, you've slightly misquoted me. I said people will think they should eat a lot of salad, I don't personally say they should. I'm not nutritionist or dieticians, that's why I'm posting in the recipe section, not nutrition. Beyond advising a well balanced diet, it's not my place to say anything.

However to the point, you are absolutely correct, but lets be honest, regardless of the science behind it, probably 90% of people when "dieting/eating well/lifestyle change" will turn to eating a lot of salad. Right or wrong, it happens.

That's why I'm trying to offer a decent salad concoction. Like you suggest, I personally prefer vegetables to salads, but I think either are better than copious amounts of cake and chocolate.
