Post natal abdominal seperation???

I believe my abdominal core muscles may have become separated after my fourth child, I was wondering because I plan on doing yoga and Pilates, if this would affect my progress of slimming & tightening my core. If I would be ok or if I need to do exercises to pull those muscles in first?

First, you should go get checked out by a doctor to verify that you do have diastasis recti and to determine how pronounced the gap is in the muscles. If it is significant the doctor may prescribe a splint to help support and move the muscles back into position.

There are exercises you can do to help heal the area in pilates, but there are also other movements that could exacerbate the problem (crunches, for example), so you should contact the studio to see if there is a class devoted to healing split abdominals or an instructor who has training who could teach some movements in a one on one session, after you've talked to the doctor about the best course of treatment, of course.

This is excellent advice. Your doctor is the one to talk to.

Look into Moms into Fitness. They have a workout series that is specifically designed for Diastasis recti.
  • Thank you all very much, I currently do not have a family doctor, Im actually not even certain how to go about getting one as Ive never had one after the age of Medicaid. Im a product and adult child of the system sadly so anything that requires insurance is a no go for me until I complete my GED classes and obtain a career. BUT I still appreciate the advice! very much and will continue to keep trying
