Another Newbie Says Hello (and then rambles on)

Hi everyone,

My name is Travis, and I enjoy candlelit dinners and long walks on the beach. I'm a 23 year old single male who's looking for a special someone to share intimate moments and exciting adventures with, and who-

Sorry, I forgot what type of website I was on for a second. *ahem*

Forgive my cheesy icebreaker, I'm not great at posts like this. My superhero origin story is fairly simple; I was very active and athletic all the way through high school, and when I graduated I was 18 and weighed about 170 pounds. When I was 19 I started working for a bank and by the time I was 21 (thanks to poor diet, and a very inactive lifestyle) I weighed 265. I realized what I was doing to myself and decided that I had to make some changes, and over the next two years managed to get myself all the way back down to the 175-180 range that I currently reside in.

I know that I'm at a pretty healthy weight, especially for my height (6' 0"), but there are still changes and improvements that I'd like to make physically for both personal and professional reasons. I've worked my way past the point where I'm overly concerned about the number on the scale, and I'm now looking to work on things like holding myself accountable for my diet, the regularity of my workouts, losing another 10-15 pounds of fat and putting on some muscle for the first time in a few years, etc.

Long story short, I'm hoping this site can help me do all of that. I've used the site before, but was very lazy about updating my information and about participating in the social aspect which I think is possibly the most important part of something like this. Who doesn't feel better when they have a support system, or people telling them honestly "you're being a bum, do something!"?

So, that's where some of you can hopefully come in.

Anyways, I guess I'll stop rambling now. I just wanted to introduce myself, and tell you all that it's incredibly inspirational and motivating to see some of the changes and growth you've all accomplished, and the strength you have as a community. If all goes according to plan maybe I can become a part of it!

    Excellent post Travis! Welcome! I hear you about the number on the scale now being less important, and trying to gain muscle and lose fat. Those are my goals for this year too.

    Well, when I dropped the previous 80 lbs it was due to a lot of cardio. When the weather is nice I run an average of 5 miles a night, 4-5 nights a week. Couple that with a lot of basketball, some jiu jitsu, cleaning up my diet a bit, etc. and I managed to do all right.

    Now that I'm down to the last little bit, I have to start focusing on specific areas... mostly the core and thighs. Tightening those two areas up will make a HUGE difference for me. Lot's of squats, burpees, lunges, planks, trunk rotations, etc. in my future I'm afraid, as well as forcing myself to get back into free weights... which I hate... they're so damned heavy.

    I'm totally open to all suggestions!

    Nah, I got nothing. You're right.

    You can't spot reduce.
    That's a **** ton of cardio.

    Look into a progressive lifting routine - Starting Strength, Strong Lifts 5x5, All Pro.
    I hope you're kidding with the free weights comments. Use a lighter weight if you can't keep form and hit reps.
    No shame in that. Form is far more important than weight.

    Don't forget deadlifts.
  • I was indeed joking, I don't have any problem with weights. I wouldn't say I'm extraordinarily strong, but I'm at the very least average strength with very good technique and form. I spent a year and a half working with a personal trainer roughly 2-3 times per week for work, so I'm not exactly a rookie, I just don't especially enjoy it as much as I enjoy cardio, circuit training, etc.

    We're in a similar boat. Now close to a nice weight but have to change things up!
