I always hated distance running (anything more than 200m !!) but also always loved a challenge so I did my first 5k after knee surgeries.
Lost PCL and lateral cartilege from left knee, instability in lateral and media ligaments + laser debridement for a patella fracture of my right knee.
Did the majority of my training on a treadmill as my knees won't tolerate much running on hard surfaces.
Good running shoes mandatory!
A plodding jog really hurts so took the opposite way to the standard C25K approach and ran intervals until I could run the whole 5k at a reasonable pace. Started with 300m run/100m walks and gradually increased the run part.
I can cycle for miles (& miles & miles...) but only have a limited amount of running in my knees, one fast 3k or a 5k is the most I can manage a week without pain and swelling. So I cycle, row or use elliptical for fitness and only run so that I can do the sports I want to. Distance running still bores me.
So once you have all clear to run from the medics it's a case of being sensible and stopping if it hurts.0
