Ok so before I get to asking questions let me give a bit of back story first. I'm 29 and a mother to three beautiful children 7, 6 and 2 1/2. As a child, teenager and until I had my second daughter I was obese. After she was born I weighed 265lbs. My husband being active duty military and constantly deploying left me as the sole care provider for our children. My weight prevented me from properly caring for them so I decided enough was enough and spent the next year losing weight. I got down to 133lbs bounced around a bit and stabilized at 145. For the last 5 years I have maintained a weight between 138-148 depending on life circumstances at any given time. I'm here again because life has gotten in the way of me taking care of myself and I want to get back to doing so. This time is different though. my aunt is diabetic and asked when I last had my blood sugar tested. We have a family history full of diabetes. She put a fresh needle in and poked my poor fingers half a dozen times. I do not bleed much. Even at the doctors they always give up and just draw blood. Finally she hit a good spot and got enough for a reading. It was 366. She gave me a holy crap look and told me to see a doctor. I made an appointment for next week. She tried checking it again in the morning before eating but couldn't get enough blood for a reading. I'm scared to death right now. I saw what this disease did to my grandfather suffering from infections that wouldn't heal ending in amputation and my grandmother in end state renal failure. I don't want that. I want to break through my stupid brick wall of 133 and never suffer from the effects of diabetes like my family. What should I do? How do you maintain stable blood sugar levels. How do you cope with intense cravings and real hunger? When I get near 133 my body fights me tooth and nail not to go lower. I've been there twice and it has been the same each time. What foods should I avoid? I do not drink soda ever( never liked it) fast foods are very limited 40 miles to the nearest one. I don't eat anything with partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup or, added sugars when there shouldn't be. Admittedly I have had white flour sneak back in lately. Going fully back to whole wheat and grains isn't an issue. I can do that no problem. And any other advice you might have will be greatly appreciated.

Wait for your doctor's appointment. He/she will probably want a fasting blood test...tell your aunt to quit poking you with needles. I have a family history of diabetes too, but with my weight controlled, a healthy diet, and exercise, my blood sugar is fine (and I'm 73!)0

I'm not a medical professional, but unless you're extremely short, I don't think losing a few more pounds from 133 lbs is going to make a big difference. Even at 5-foot-even, 133 lbs barely pushes you out of the normal range into overweight. It seems like it's genetic factors that are at play here, if it turns out that you are diabetic (and I agree with the poster who suggested stopping your aunt from poking you with needles and waiting until you see your doctor). Did the relatives who faced amputation and renal failure comply with medical advice about diet and medication? Diabetes does not inevitably have to lead to those complications.
Here's a link to the Mayo Clinic site with lots of information on the subject that might be helpful to you. As far as nutrition, they recommend eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and less animal products, refined carbs, and sweets. For exercise, it recommends at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise nearly every day.

Best of luck, and let us know how things turn out.0
