Every ... single ... time ...

Every time I get into an amazing groove with exercise, something happens.

This time, over the holidays, I got pneumonia.

Me: "Aw yeah finally found my motivation and I'm going to bust my butt every day and..."

Life: *looks @ you all like:*

My doctor (and the internet) has advised me to take it slowly, like right now I can only walk and do yoga... no kickboxing or heavy weight lifting or anything more intense than a moderately paced walk for 2-3 weeks after my symptoms have completely gone away.

It's frigid outside so I'm a little hesitant to walk because it makes my lungs feel like they're going to explode and I'm really fearing re-infecting myself, I don't currently have a gym membership so I don't have access to a treadmill, and I have some "light day" exercise DVDs at home but by the time I get home from work I am dragging myself into bed because the illness has taken so much out of me already (but I have been pushing myself to at least do some yoga / breathing exercises to try to get my lungs to stop sucking at being lungs again).

I know it's good to rest when you're sick, but I had only just gotten started. :(

How do you guys stay motivated when life just keeps kicking you down?

    Just keep getting back up.

Take it easy, heal up, you'll be fine in a couple weeks.

Sorry you're sick! It seems to be going around right now and the only way to really get through it is to rest and let your body get better. If your goal is losing weight, you technically don't have to exercise to do so (though obviously exercise is an important part of maintaining a healthy body and life), you can simply stick with your eating goals and as long as you are eating at a deficit, you should still drop pounds. When you are better, slowly work your way back to your workouts. I personally think yoga is an excellent activity and I have been getting really good results since I have started.

Remember how much worse it could be.

There was a time when all that I could do was go out my door, walk 5 minutes, and turn around and just barely get home. But that was what I could do so I did it. That created a commitment to moving my butt every day. Eventually I could go an extra minute or two, then I could add five minutes, then I did some situps (3 if I remember right). Eventually I went back to the gym.

Now I go almost every day and I lift weights and do some cardio. When I'm sick I rest. When I'm able to go again I just pick up and go.

It helps if you shift the focus from what you can't do to what you CAN do.

I feel your pain. I was off for 2 weeks from Stronglifts due to Christmas and sickness and Sunday, I began again with the thought that I'm going to do this no matter what, nothing is keeping me from the gym. Gym closed at noon on New Year's Eve and was closed New Year's Day, so no exercise those days. Today, my son has a doctor appointment during my gym time, so I'm frustrated because now I have to go after work and it's busiest during that time. However, I WILL get to the gym today and do my sets, NO MATTER WHAT!

Just remember the harder you push yourself while you're ill, the longer it will take to get better. It's hard to take it easy when you're in a groove - but take care of yourself! Just keep eating right and do what you can!

I hope you start to feel better!

On my last weight loss attempt I was doing great then I got a coughing/breathing issue where it was hard to exercise or even go outside in the cold at times. Then I let it be the thing that broke my resolve, I felt sorry for myself and I comfort ate. I wish I had someone then to keep me on track.

Do what you can, increasing little by little when you feel better. But on days when you feel ill focus on eating healthy food and not over loading your calories. Set your MFP goal at maintenance levels if needed (until you feel better obviously) That way when you do feel better you wont have set yourself back.

Walking and yoga? 2 of my favourite things. Focus on how they help you to relax and help you focus on your goals. Yoga will keep your flexible and does help with strength and walking clears the mind.

BTW - Your JA gif made me smile, so if you have to distract yourself from food, how about a SN catchup marathon? :)

I've dropped 73 lbs in 18 months, starting lifting, made gains, and was humping 1/4 of my new bodyweight in a pack 30-40 miles a week.

On December 4th I fainted at work. On December 9th I had a 16cc benign tumor removed from my heart.

I can't do a mile a day currently. No weight lifting until mid-April at the earliest.

Ugh, I'm sorry. I hope you feel better soon. I think your plan of doing yoga sounds like a good one, as well as staying within your calorie goal. Maybe after a few more days of rest you'll feel up to going for a short walk and can increase walking as your strength returns. I can't blame you for wanting to take it easy, pneumonia sucks.
