"Runners will start at Railroad Park in downtown Birmingham, run two miles to Children's Hospital where they will eat a dozen doughnuts, then run back along the same route and finish back at Railroad Park."
It's a fundraiser for a local children's hospital. I did not make this up.

I don't understand this.
If I were a member of a board involving fundraising at a children's hospital in one of the fattest states in one of the fattest countries in the world, where childhood obesity is a growing problem, and someone came to me with this idea, I would tell them to go away and try again . . .
Clearly, that's not what happened.0 -
It's not that much different than McDonald's sponsoring the Olympics.0

This! It's exactly what I was thinking.0 -
Wonder if they'll have pre-designated barf stations on the 2 mile return course? :sick:0

If I ate even 1 donut before or during a run I would be very very very nauseous! This sounds like a dumb idea to me.0

There is a doughnut run in my town as well. Also, beer runs, chocolate runs, etc...
The key is just to spark peoples' interest to get fundraising dollars flowing in. I would support it. The goal is fundraising, and eating a couple (or even a dozen, if you can do that) doughnuts one day will not make people obese.0 -

It is different, because the athletes at the Olympics aren't asked to eat McDonalds during their 400m run or in the middle of a volleyball game.
This is the perfect recipe for puking.
Although, what comes to mind for me is when you participate in one of those "Amazing Race" type deals and one of the obstacles is to eat a large amount of something. I participated in one once and I ate 8 hotdogs plus buns, a pound of tater tots and half a chocolate cake in the middle of a 4 hour long "race". I didn't puke though. Champ :drinker:0 -
The Utica Boilermaker 15K road race is sponsored by a brewery, and the participants are encouraged to partake.0

2,400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 5 miles, 1 hour –
So if I finished it in an hour, I'd burn considerably less than 500 calories, leaving me with almost 2000 calories of surplus. Meaning I'd be gaining weight as well as puking for charity. There has to be a better way.0 -

OMG, that would be AWESOME!!!0 -
The idea came from a bunch of hungover college kids, what did you expect. The original challenge was not the eating it part but rather the not puking with all the alcohol from the night before.0

there are lots of people who consider races with twists like these to be fun challenges. they get bored with the standard 5K or 10K runs and they like to do something different. sometimes this means to run in a costume... sometimes it means to run on an obstacle course... sometimes it means to do an eating/drinking challenge while racing.0 -
