Work Out Plan Help

I have been working out 4 days weekly at Planet Fitness since Nov 2013. I was following a low carb diet for the first 3 weeks and cut that when my doctor explained it is the worst diet possible due to my health issues. My doctor suggested the South Beach Diet instead (still need to do research on that one).

Anyway, after 2 months of doing the PF 30 minute Circuit Training and 10 minutes for 1 mile on the elliptical at a 13 resistance I have GAINED 20 pounds. I recently added a 60 second squat (hold the position) while throwing a 10 pound medicine ball at a trampoline (I've only done this for 3 days).

I do feel more energetic and have cut out eating unhealthy foods. I am just disappointed with results. I mean, gaining 20 pounds in 2 months? This is crazy and has definitely left me in the dumps. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get the scale moving?

A - Your doctor needs to look into things before he suggests them. South beach Diet is a LOW CARB diet.

B - Are you weighing and measuring ALL of your food?

C - Are you eating back exercise calories? If you are, how are you getting your calories burned?

20 pounds is a lot to gain that quickly. You may want to have some blood work done. It could also be bloating and water weight if you ate crappy at the holidays like I did. Otherwise, I would figure you're likely eating a lot more than you burn, although it's have to be A LOT more to gain that much. Weigh, measure and log all your food and make sure you're eating at a deficit. Also, unless you have a HRM, remember, MFP, other sites and machines calories burn estimates aren't always accurate.

You should probably open your diary so people can have a better idea of how to help. If you are gaining weight then you are most likely either pregnant our eating too much. Just because a food is "healthy" doesn't mean you can't eat too much of it and gain weight from it.

The one thing that is a misconception is that you can't gain weight while eating healthy-- its about calories burned vs calories ate. So you can overeat healthy foods.

Also, are you logging drinks that have calories? sometimes people don't realize how many calories are in the things that they drink.

You may be overestimating how many calories you are working, maybe increase the intensity of your workout?

Woah. 20lbs is way too much to be caused by water retention from exercise.

    1. Are you weighing youself on the same scale, under the same conditions (clothing, time of day, point in menstrual cycle)
    2. Are you ACCURATELY logging every bite of food? (You really should be usng a food scale and not estimating anything)
    3. Are you eating out at restaurants a lot or holiday parties that you haven't been logging?
    4. Are you constipated (serious question- can cause a lot of scale weight and bloating)
    5. How many calories do you typically log for the 30min circuit and 1 mile on elliptical?

    ETA: Could you be pregnant?

Are you sure your scales are working? Have you tried to weigh yourself on any other scales?

^All of this. And could you open your diary? It'll help give us a better view of what is going on.

    All of this ^^

Gaining 20 lbs in 2 months works out to about 2 lbs a week, a bit more. That's an average of about 1000 calories above maintenance calories a day. It's totally possible, I could do it I have no doubt. If I was burning about 350 calories in exercise, as I'd guess you are based on your activity, I'd have to eat about 3150 a day to put on 2 lbs a week. Even eating "healthy" foods, I could do it, no problem. It's really not THAT much.

However, some of it very well may be water weight. Or scale inconsistencies. Or all of the above. The good thing is, IF even part of it is just a matter of calorie consumption, you can totally just start tracking it, eating at a deficit, and get the results you want.
