GarminConnect vs Training Peaks

Looking for opinions from anyone who uses either of these web-based programs and if they have a preference over the other and why?

Thanks for the input!

  • I have used both of these websites. I started with Garmin Connect simply because I had 2 Garmin watches.
Then I purchased the Timex Run Trainer 2.0 recently which uses Training Peaks.

Garmin Connect has improved their site since I first started using it back 2006. The best feature about Connect is all the features are included (no premium upgrade required). So you can plan workouts in your calendar if you like, but it doesn't have the ability to send you an email reminder, sync with your Outlook, Google, iCal or any such thing. For the most part it works strictly with Garmin watches. You can upload .tcx & .gpx files but you might lose some information such lap info, heart rate monitors if its something other than Garmin.

Training Peaks supports many different devices Garmin, Timex, Polar and many more. If you start using TP and you switch GPS watches, you still have all your data. The down side (personally speaking) is TP is divided into basic and premium users. So you cannot simply add a planned workout without being a premium member. However as premium member you can have your TP Calendar sync with your Outlook, Google or iCal. Also their membership is not cheap $20/mth or $120/year.
However TP have an iPhone & Android mobile app (No Windows Phone at this time). TP also has the ability to track your meals (sort of like myFitnesspal but its not as good). TP is trying to work with MFP (myfitnesspal) for some integration as a lot of TP users are asking for.
TP is a true triathlete training log however.

Hope this helps... There are now several sites that can be used for tracking multiple sports Endomondo, Runtastic, Strava.... They all have their pros & cons.

I bought a MTB training plan that is done through Training Peaks (the free version). I'm not terribly impressed. It's a little clunky and if I want to do my Sunday workout on Saturday I can't change it until Monday afterwards.

I also use Strava to track my GPS and see if I'm getting better, etc. I've never used Garmin as I just use my phone currently but I was actually just checking out the Garmin Edge 500. It's on sale. :drinker:
