Best Wii Exercises

Hi Gang:

I just got a Wii for Christmas. I am so excited. BUT, I am not a video game type of chick, so this is new to me. I want to use this thing for some super awesome and intense work outs. Can anyone give me some ideas for great Wii workout games? What is your favorite? Do I need a body board or yoga mat or something? THe version of the Wii that I have is called a Wii sport. Hope that is the correct name. And before anyone suggests the Michael Jackson Experience....I'm all over it. I think I have that one covered. =0)

thanks in advance

I used to do Wii bowling at the gym. Standing on one of those wobbly half balls. Loved it. :-)
  • I am curious about this as well. I need to get my wii fixed because I really want to use it for exercise!

Loved my Wii, I used it a few years ago to get back on track after a few years out of the gym and out of shape. I used Golds gym cardio workout, which was a bunch of fun kickboxing. You need the controller and nunchuck.
I also used EA sports active-I heard they discontinued it, but you might be able to pick up a used copy, it was the BEST. lots of variety, with body weight, cardio, balance, etc. This also used the controller and nunchuck.
And another good one was My Fitness Coach. you don't need anything but the remote for that one.

The burn depends on how much you put into it. I can play tennis by moving no more than my hand, or I can play with my full body, plunging for shots and giving each swing my all (which I do) to get a nice burn. The Wii is very adaptable that way for those who can't do much at first. It also gets harder as you get better, so more challenging as you improve.

The tennis is my all-time favorite. I also get a great burn and have great fun with boxing. The step games are fun too. I recommend you get some dance games if you really want to crank up the burn (hip hop dance experience is excellent for me), and use Wii Fit Plus and balance board for some core strengthening, balance and some great intro cardio.

I am a Wii ADDICT and just got my daughter hooked too. It's a great way to burn if you put your heart into it! If you're not sweating, you need to crank it up.

You can increase the pace by fast forwarding through replays and resets with the A button, and keep your hind end moving while doing so. I always do stretching, dancing, squatting during any "down time" between play so that I can get a straight 30-minutes of play time with no breaks (except water).

Anyone who wants a Wii buddy, feel free to friend me!

EA Active 2 has been a fav or mine! They discontinued the online compenent, FYI, but there's a mix of cardio and strength training available and you can set your own workouts. There's a version for NFL that takes away the step aerobics and some other things and adds in more football type drills if that'd make it more fun for you. Either way getting the EA Active 2 kind instead of the original EA active lets you use a leg strap sensor instead of a leg strap you put a nunchuck into. (so less wire in your way, I never tried the original just didn't like the idea of the nunchuck). It also has a heart rate monitor/sensor for your left arm so you can track that too if you wish.

The other one I've enjoyed a ton for cardio is called Exerbeat. Dance game with aerobics, hiphop, Latin, boxercise (my fav!) and Karate. I think their estimated Calorie burns are really high but it's been fun. Unfortunately that one is hard to find now and often pretty expensive.

Do you have a Wii Fit game and board? Gold's Gym Cardio Workout is a great game, I found the Zumba game to be trash. Workout games are usually dirt cheap.

Oh and both the EA Active 2 and the Exerbeat have components you CAN use with a WIiFit board, but you don't have to have/use one to get a lot out of the game. I use WiiFit as my scale and the hooping is a good one (also the rhythm boxing at first). It's not always the toughest for a workout though and there's not a ton of variety in the workouts, especially the cardio ones.

Get the Wii Fit meter. It will unlock the Wii Fit game itself. I've been doing that for my workouts all of last month. You do need the Wii Fit balance board though.

I'll also vouch for EA Active 2.... although I stopped using it as my downstairs neighbour complained about the noise, oops!

Haha, no, it was fantastic. Sore muscles the first few times, though!

I don't have a fit board. Do I need one? That sounds like fun.

I have a Wii Fit Plus - to use all the games you do need a Board and nunchucks in addition to the controller. I like the weight tracking feature and the graphing section that lets me record exercise done outside the Wii games. Little Miss Wii gets a little sassy when I slack off for a few days or put on some weight, but it is motivating! :noway: Especially like the boxing workouts.

If you aren't afraid to get into it and like variety/choreography, the Zumba and Just Dance games are great for cardio (and the Zumba one seems to incorporate ab work, as well). You don't need the Wii Fit Balance Board for either of those. If you get a Zumba one, make sure you get one that comes with the little belt thing (you put the controller in a pocket on your hip). If you happen to have kids, nieces or nephews, there are some kids ones too that you could do with a little one - Just Dance Kids, Just Dance Nickelodeon, etc.

Also the Active Life series (Active Life Outdoor Challenge is one) can be great for cardio if you pick some of the harder games and prefer "playing" than dancing. Those come with a mat.

As someone else stated, it's all about how intense you try to get. You could probably do a lot of them by sitting on the couch and moving your arm. So find some that are fun enough that you want to get off the couch and really get into it. Enjoy!

I love using my wii for losing weight, the gym has never worked for me and I tend to want to exercise at 10pm after I work, eat dinner and relax a little, so it is really convenient. I belong to the MFP group Wii Fit 4 Life "http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/515-wii-fit-4-life" and would love more people to talk to and get ideas from!! I belong to Facebook local "yard sale or virtual sales" where a lot of people have sold wii game systems with games and controllers for only $50, so that is an option too for anyone looking to try the Wii for weight loss. My favorite game by far is the Wii Fit plus and I'm using that to track my weight.
