Online personal trainer/coach

I'm thinking about finding one and would like to hear your experiences and advice. It would be better to work with somebody IRL of course, but I live in the middle of nowhere, 40 miles from the nearest gym. I'm mainly wanting guidance on setting up a program of exercise to follow at home. I'd also like advice regarding diet.

Sorry for typos and grammar; I am posting from iPod. All replies appreciated!

Look up Stronglifts, New Rules of Lifting for Women (& the newer books ,Supercharged I think?), Starting Strength, and AllPro.

Pick the one that suits your best.

    Eat approx 1g/lb of lbm

I was just going to suggest the adopt a noob thread too!

Another option would be to go to the group "Eat, Train, Progress" - you'll get the support you need there...for free!

We actually did an interview with Steve Troutman in the group and touched on this. He is a trainer/coach, both IRL and online who is also a member here.

It's a long interview - the pertinent part is about 1/2 way down.

Thanks! I thought about putting myself up for adoption, but didn't know if I qualify as a noob as I've been here a while. I just don't post much.

I agree with the books mentioned (New Rules of Lifting…)

You can look up form and such on YouTube.

If you do want a real trainer, make sure you can Skype (or FaceTime, or which ever you use for video conference) and that they will be able to correct your form, etc.

As far as diet, eat less than you burn (which will depend a lot on your stats), 1 g protein/ pound of your lean body mass (that's part of your calories, not in addition to), and aim for mostly healthful things like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, etc, though a treat once in a while is fine too. Many trainers have no real education in nutrition and just recommend what they've heard/learned informally (or the little bit in trainer certification) without really knowing how to tailor it to you.

I hope you find the best fit for you! :flowerforyou:
