Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome- Need help with workout ideas!

Options
Hi all! I have been working out alot lately and have been doing the 30 Day Shred and the last few weeks one of my feet have been really hurting and tingling. I went to the doctor and he says I have Tarsal Tunnel , which is Carpal Tunnel but in your feet. So I can no longer do things like 30 day shred cause of the jumping jacks, jump rope, butt kicks. It needs to be low impact on my feet. I am doing the elliptical but would like to work out my arms, does anyone have any good videos for that? I'm thinking I could do all or most of the Power Sculpt from Biggest Loser but have to watch it again to be sure.

Anyone else have this or something like this? Any tips on other workouts i can do? I do not have a gym membership so I cannot do any pool activities.

Thank you! I am despratly looking for stuff to be able to workout still!

I have been doing T-Tapp (go to T-Tapp.com to check out some free try before you buy workout videos) for a while and I love it. There isn't any jumping around, but it is a very demanding workout for your whole body none the less. It is also very rehabilitative :)

If you liked Jillian - you should check out her yoga meltdown. It is low impact for your feet, no jumping that I recall. There are a couple times she says you can jump, or just step out. It is still pretty hard and a good workout. I felt it all through my entire stomach and arms and back yesterday. The elliptical is good for the cardio as the yoga doesn't give you a lot of that, but the yoga does help build the muscle. I burned about 220 cals doing it, so not bad for 30 minutes of yoga.

Can you modify the exercises to not be so hard on your feet? Thinking of the 30-day shred stuff:

I don't do the jumping jacks either, but that's only 'cause I don't want to annoy my downstairs neighbor. Instead I do the same arm motion as a jumping jack but do heel taps (put your leg out in front of you and tap the floor with your heel). Not quite as cardio, but if you get a bit of a squat going while you're doing them, it certainly works the legs. You can do the butt kicks from a stand still (get your arms moving though -- I do across body punches) and still feel the stretch in your legs. I do the same thing for jump rope that I do for jumping jacks.

Worth a shot if you really like the program otherwise.

At Stringcheese , No you can not just modify. I was recently diagnosed with this. First it is very rare. Second I do all the classes , Shred, Boot Camp , Kick Boxing, Zumba, Stability Ball Plus, Muscle pump, HITT, Pilates , Spin, Yoga and Tai Chi. I have been doing so for 5 years. 21 classes a week plus free weights. It started with a ache in my plantar a few years ago.. I told a couple of my trainers , they all said it was plantar fasciitis. Seemed logical at my age of 52. I treated like it was but never slowed down. How often do we hear push through the pain and of we don't we are thought weak. I pushed and really thought it was just getting old stuff. Back in July I went on a kayaking day trip. When I got out of the kayak I heard a very loud pop , I could not place pressure on that leg at all. I went to my PCP who told me I sprained it and it would be fine a about a week. Ten weeks later I went to a specialist. I took my shoes and my schedule. He looked at the schedule said No more of any of it. We can't use our feet to exercise with Period. Specifically Yoga and pilates.Anything that causes you to flex is a NO, NO . Hoping to avoid surgery I have chosen a very conservative approach, Rest lots of it ( drives me nuts) Ice , Heat. Orthotics help a lot. I went on a 30 day dose of Prednisone ( A evil drug) that did help with the pain yet I gained 12 pounds in 2 weeks even eating a 1000 calorie a day diet. I was hoping to fool it but weight gain is a well known side effect. He made me a custom orthotic. I returned for a follow up and had improved so much I do not need the cortisone shots. Which was my hope as that will weaken the nerve and I want to strengthen it. Surgery is the most likely outcome if we do not REST ..It kills me but it works. Sure I will gain a few pounds and get a bit soft , but once it is better I can go back to working out. It will have to be different from my usual Kick butt till I drop approach. Trex is a good way to work out without your feet , It uses your body as weights and engages the core. Since I need my feet for a long time I am following this VERY conservative approach to fix this Very Rare injury. The gym caused it make no mistake about it. Also get a stability ball great for work outs without stress on Tarsal Tunnel .... Good Luck

After 3 years Stringcheese probably doesn't care anymore.
