I'm curious how people go about logging espresso? My espresso machine has a dial that controls how much water to use for each shot. I know that 1 oz of espresso is 3 calories, but is that for a 1 oz shot? If I get one shot that is 3 oz, is it 9 calories or still 3 calories? If I get three 3 oz shots, is that 9 calories or 27 calories?

Do you mean you're making three 3 oz shots from the amount of ground espresso that is normally meant for 1 oz espresso? I wouldn't expect that to be nine times the calories in one 1 oz full strength pull, but it probably would be marginally more. (What does that last 3 oz shot taste like??!)
How much of this are you drinking? I think a lot of people would consider me obsessive about logging, but I wouldn't waste a lot of time worrying about this. Log it as two regular shots (if you're really reusing the grounds, and sorry, got to say :noway: ) and move on. If it's fresh grounds, and three times what you would use for a regular shot, then log it as nine regular espressos (27 calories).

I do three shots, three separate things of grounds, but I run approximately three ounces of water through each time.
Some days I will have 3 or 4 "cups" with three shots each. So, if the three shots are 27 calories vs 9 calories, it could add up a bit. I mean it is still not much and I am probably obsessing more than I should, but it could be 27 calories total vs 81 calories. That is a difference of 54 calories, which is like... some extra mayo or butter or part of an avocado.0 -
I assume that a 2 oz shot should be using 16 grams of coffee (standard double espresso basket). I count each double that I make as 2 oz (actual shots are closer to 2.5 oz including crema - 25 to 30 second pulls). So I count a double as 6.
And yes, I do weigh it out every time and even measure the tamping pressure to be sure that I tamp and 30 pounds of pressure.

Since you couldn't possibly consume enough espresso or coffee for the calories to matter, just enjoy it and don't bother logging it.0

OK, I think I understand. Your "cup" has three 3 oz. shots, and each 3 oz shot uses the amount of grounds normally used for a 1 oz. shot? You're not getting three times the normal calories you would get if you pulled a 1 oz. shot (if you could get two more full strength espressos from the used grounds, people would use less or reuse the grounds). But you are getting something beyond what the first ounce of water would pull out of the grounds. I doubt you're going to find anything definitive on this, because it's not how most people brew espresso. My guess would be that you're getting maybe twice the calories in a 3 oz pull as you would in a 1 oz. So, say 6 cals a shot,or just count it as two 1 oz espressos, rather than three, for a total of six 1 oz espressos (18 cals) in each "cup."
If I misunderstood you, and you're using three times as much grounds for your 3 oz shot as would normally be used for a 1 oz. shot, then, yes, each 3 oz. shot should have 9 calories, and your cups would have 27 calories.0
