Losing weight without exercise?

Hi!
(First of all, I am very sorry if this is a stupid question, or one that has been asked a million times, and I am somehow not aware of the answer even though I should be)
So, I have been losing weight at a much faster weekly rate than I expected. I was doing the 30 Day shred, and before that I was doing some interval elliptical everyday. I stopped the shred a few days before Christmas due to busy-ness, and then didn't pick it back up again due to busy-ness, I haven't done it since. I do a small amount of cardio every night, nothing major at all, so I figured stopping the shred was going to affect my weight loss. I weighed myself the next week, I had lost even more than I had during the shred/just doing elliptical.
So. My question is: Is it necessary to exercise in order to lose weight/lose fat? From what I have gathered from this message board, weight loss seems to be all about caloric deficit, overall healthiness is about exercising. If I am always eating under/at my calorie limit for weight loss, will I continue to see the results I'm having, or will I begin to plateau pretty soon due to not working out?
(I am 19 years old, 5'6", 179 lbs)

My own opinion..... do not try to lose weight without exercising. This may not go for all, but im pretty sure this is why my body is the way it is.
I had a child very young, gained ALOT of weight. It took me a year to get the weight off. I lost about 75 pounds, by just changing my eating. No junk/snacks/ fat/ fried anything, or condiments. I lost the weight, and am left with loose skin. My stomach I know would have been like this due to my pregnancy anyway... however I think I lost weight at a way too fast pace, that my skin couldn't catch up to the rest of my body.
Exercising, I think would have helped this out a lot. As I would have lost weight, while gaining muscle at the same time.0 -
You can absolutely lose weight by simply creating a caloric deficit. Exercise helps with many things though.....heart health, bone and joint health, and not to mention the way your body looks when you have finished losing weight.....just to name a few.
Chances are you were holding onto a bit of glycogen and water and when you stopped exercising you lost that and then if you were also in a caloric deficit during that time you could have possibly lost a little additional weight as well.0
