Are Carbs are the devil!

Carbs are the devil??? I've heard and seen this on here so many times that carbs are bad or you should only eat the good carbs or eating too many carbs doesn't matter because it's all about calories in calories out. I've never paid too much attention to the sayings because I love me some carbs! Oh yes some pizza, lasagna, garlic bread, a big ol' hamburger with lots of toppings! Mmm Mmm mmm!

I'm here today to say that although carbs may not be the devil, eating over a certain amount FOR ME is not good. I'm always bloated, craving sweets and always hungry even when eating the recommended amount! 40/30/30 is now my balance!

Seriously! by reducing my carb intake slightly and putting it elsewhere I sleep better, I'm less hungry, the cravings are not as bad and I have more energy.....no more bloating!!! Well the other 3 weeks at least! To top it off I'm eating the same amount of calories but now I'm losing weight! Who knew!

I don't want to hear any negative comments please but I'd like to hear from those who know what I'm talking about or have delt with this. Could this mean I'm sensitive to carbs or maybe my body doesn't process them right?

hmmmm... I think I can see a slight resemblance....

On a more serious note, I agree, carbs are not the devil. I went from obese to lean eating 40% carbs, 30% protein, 30% fat. I think the main issue with carbs is if you're not tracking it's very easy to overeat on carb foods as they're not satisfying like fat and protein foods. I can maintain my weight without tracking provided I'm careful to get enough protein and good quality fat. If I'm under on those I start craving carbs then overeating on them. IMO moderate fat, moderate carb diet is the way to go, rather than either low fat or low carb (with the exception of people being on those diets for medical reasons)

are you obese and relatively new to exercise?

this lyle mcdonald article implies that those with obesity could have insulin issues (even if there is no diabetes or pre-diabetes) and that limiting carbs helps in fat loss. it's a long read (6 parts) but worth it

I hear you loud and clear. I find it so much easier to stick to my calorie goal if I don't have too many carbs. For some reason they just make me hungrier.

I love carbs, I eat as many as I can to get the best results, and it hasn't hindered my weight loss. The type of carbs I eat, however, are generally limited to vegetables and rice.

See I'm eating all sorts of things. ..even in moderation. I can eat brown rice or an egg roll and starve! I could eat while wheat toast or a cookie and starve!!! I can eat chicken with veggies and be full for like 5 hours. I don't get it!

different foods have glycemic indexes which will effect how long you feel full.. this is also related to insulin response

carbs are as important as the other foods you eat. Like some of the posters above I prefer mine complex :-)
  • Me, too. I have best results, by far, when I restrict carbs, and since I have thyroid issues, It's the best for me as well. I restrict the white flour, sugar, white rice, for now....I still have a long way to go.

Over the holidays, I read a book called "Shift" by Tori Johnson (Good Morning America contributor)...it helped me a lot with my mindset on doing what I have to do. That includes doing what you know works for you (and I'll add ... so long as a doctor approves the plan). I recommend anyone with a lot of weight to lose, or who has been consistently overweight in their lifetime, to read it if possible.

    Good luck!

Have you ever considered you might be gluten intolerant....
I mean I struggled with stomach aches and a bloated feeling since my 13th... Can you imagine....
Recently I discovered I had the great idea it might be gluten or lactose..... Guess what every time I ate like cheese (louds) I got a stomach ache like a day after.....
Ever since I void cheese and lactose products (the best as possible).
I feeeeel so much better!!!! Just try to eat some other food and listen to your body!!!
But as a little note to the side.... Carbs aren't necesarily bad!!!
ps: I stilll LOOOOOOVE cheese.... Just now eat very small portions!!!!

I agree with everyone and as for me I do the good carbs only in small amounts, but I am on South Beach Diet. I've realized that it's what works best for me with the way I feel and energy level. It helped me loose weight without cravings..or regrets. Good luck in your journey.

I am going to try to keep my macros in check and eat more protein. My goals are to put on more muscle over time and lift heavy.
When I need to do a distance run, I will make sure to eat more carbs.

So when I'm able to exercise carbs will be more important now that I'm not able to exercise do you think?
  • There are good carbs and bad carbs issue is everyone loads on the bad carbs keeping them fat in result is that all carbs are bad. If you kept carbs under 20g a day you would notice more weight loss.

I meant when I run over 9 miles for my long run for the week make sure I eat more and carb load a few days in advance, in addition to what I normally eat. Probably more confusing that what you are asking.
I don't fear carbs. I just try to keep a 40% protien 30% carb 30% fat ratio (that I never seem to manage)

Interesting given most other diets say the same evilness about certain carbs but yet when you cut out those bad carbs it does work...guess that is BS too.

In the grand scheme of things, weight loss is about the deficit. No food is inherently good or bad. The overall diet is what determines this. That being said, the same applies for carbs. I get my carbs from all kinds of things, there are no exclusions to what I eat. My focus is on nutrient density and not on trivial words like "good" or "bad". Different balances are up to the individual but weight loss will happen in a deficit, regardless.

Listen to your body. If you feel better with less carbs, then eat less carbs. You might have some mild insulin resistance causing these symptoms.

I'm newly type 2 diabetic and am allowed 135 carbs/day right now. That may well decrease once I get my next blood tests done but it's where they started me at. I just used the custom settings to adjust the mfp level to track it.

A suggestion, always have some kind of protein when eating carbs. It slows down absorption and decreases the blood sugar spike. Selecting fiber rich, nutrient rich carbs helps with this too. It's the wild spike up and down in your blood sugar that causes fatigue, carb craving, increased appetite etc.

The reason I restrict carbs (still, my goal is 40% carbs) is so I can reach (or at least get closer to) my protein goal (120g), pretty much. That's about it.
