Today show story... Rant alert!

So I was watching the Today Show and there was a story about a teacher who had his students work up his menu (basically IIFYM) but with only McDonald's food.

So, besides sodium (which was almost double recommended levels), he lost a bunch of weight, his blood levels all improved, etc.
He only added walking for 45 minutes a day for activity (but yes, he DID add activity.)

There was a fitness lady also featured that ended the feature by saying "and now I'm going to teach him to eat sensibly with NO fast food."

I'm thinking that a college-educated man who taught his students how to make McDonald's menu work (besides sodium) is probably very capable of figuring out how to eat sensibly without fast food all by himself.

My point is, why can't some people just chill and realize that sensible eating can be done without demonizing foods?

/rant

It's the same reason our dietitans at the office have such limited success in getting people to lose weight. They can't for the life of them understand that perfect is the enemy of good.

Why can't people just chill and not rant about what other people do?

Sounds like something he'd say. But perfect is the enemy of good has been around a sight longer than Rip.

I wonder if he will be getting free McDonald's for life, ha! Kinda like Jared and Subway. If that's the case, I'd like to go on the Starbucks diet, LOL!! :drinker:

That same lady was the one on New Years Day saying to scoop out the inside of your bagel to save calories, use spaghetti squash instead of pasta, and some other BS that wasn't worth remembering.

Without having seen the show, I'm not sure I understand. How does suggesting the teacher needed to be shown how to eat sensibly demonize food?

Why are those BS suggestions? Wouldn't those options reduce the calories?

The next fad will be a McRib diet.....the excessive gastrointestinal distress will cause weight loss.

    I like McDonald's wraps BTW

Ah, I was in a hurry with my rant this morning, so I was unable to be very clear.

On the show, she was somewhat demonizing of McDonalds (fast food). She came across as (although this is NOT a quote) "fast food is SOOO BAD" and somewhat of a "fast food should be avoided at all costs" attitude.

My point was that it's MUCH (x 10) more of a challenge for the teacher & his students to build a healthier diet that's conducive to weight loss / management within the limitations of a McDonald's menu than it is to build one without. If he can handle doing that, I'm *positive* that he can handle building a healthy diet WITHOUT any fast food. And since he LIKES fast food, he can also do it while balancing eating fast food AND non-fast food.

    My ultimate point is this:
The man is obviously intelligent. There was no reason to be condescending and make him look kinda' stoopid by adding the whole "and now *I'm* going to teach him how to eat *WITHOUT* fast food."

Sure, but I don't want to cut calories by dismembering delicious food or replacing it. That's why it's BS to me.

If you want to, knock yourself out.

OIC Don't you think she was likely giving general suggestions for cutting calories and not advice tailored directly at you (or me)? Personally, I happen to think spaghetti squash falls into the delicious foods category.

just for my 2 cents on the whole spaghetti squash thing...

It's kind of a thing for people adhering to a strictly low carb deal. That's not me, as I'm IIFYM.

I loves me some veges! My choice of how to eat spaghetti squash would involve some butter & a bit of sugar. I seldom get around to fixing it, but it sure sounds good to me.

I have a friend who substitutes squash for pasta in spaghetti for that for the low carb thing,
I'm (secretly) happy that she does it because she likes so few veges that this way she works in the nutrients of the squash.

    Good for you.

I thought it was funny that she was touting all this stuff and sort of demonizing food on Jan. 1, but today, congratulating a man on his weight loss from eating McDonald's for the last 3 months. Makes her look a bit hypocritical.

And spaghetti squash will never replace pasta in my house. But I'm glad you enjoy it.

ohhhh... I was unclear of where the spaghetti squash came in...
the fitness pro ON THE SHOW was talking about spaghetti squash & the like...
So much for my Monday morning reading comprehension. LOL!

The fact is that spaghetti squash does make a pretty good sub for pasta if you are looking to lower calories. It seems a good tip to me (and one that is often passed along on MFP so I would assume others find it helpful). It doesn't mean one can't ever eat pasta or that one can only eat spaghetti squash in place of pasta.

We don't need to demonize foods just because they are low calorie.

Let's try this again. Spaghetti squash AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR PASTA, FOR ME, will never happen. I will eat the real deal and work it into my calories. Spaghetti squash on its own? Perfectly acceptable, TO ME. What you want to do with it is your business.

I know you love a good internet argument, but that's about all I have to say about spaghetti squash.
