situps--how many are too many--and what type?

Hello all.
I want to start doing sit ups every night. I'd like to know what other routines you all have?
This is what I want to do: 5 sets of consecutive situps--each set followed by a 1 minute break. I would do "crunch" situps.
I'm a one-time martial artist hoping to get back into martial arts--and I want to be able to take a punch in the stomach and not feel it (or not be defeated by it, at least.)
Does my planned routine sound too aggressive? Or is it just right?

Thanks,

Pete

What did you do for your abs when you were just getting into martial arts? I would start with that and work my way up from there.
  • Hi Pete. There are almost as many opinions about ab workouts as there are trainers. "Sit ups" in their traditional form are rare these days. If you're just getting started, there are a lot of good, short, free training videos on YouTube - probably some that are martial arts specific, although I've not searched for them. (Sadly, there are some not-so-good ones on there as well . . . but it's a start.)

    I'd probably start with:

and then adjust from there. If it's crazy easy for you, just add more in until it's challenging. If it's already quite challenging, it'll give you something to work towards.
