Real Equipment vs Heavy Stuff around the house

I was trying to talk to the bf about how I would like to start going back to the gym for the weight lifting equipment. His response was "why don't you just swing a sledge hammer at a tire for 20 mins or carry around 2x4s?"

I get that it can work, but I really like the structure of going to the gym. I have a membership, but we live about 30mins out of town and both of us are looking for work so money for gas is few and far between. It would be different if he would do it with me I guess, but he's more, "go out there and do it" and not wanting to do it together. I know myself well enough that if I'm out there on my own I just fill silly and will stop.

So what do you like? Do you like the structure of going to the gym/using equipment or do you improvise and use what you have at home?

I hate going to the gym, always have.

I have invested lots of money over the years to buy equipment for my home. Best money I ever spent.

personally i'd perfer a gym but it can be done at home like that.

There is a ton of **** that you can do just with your body weight thats probably going to be a little safer then just picking some random object and doing whatever with it.

also i would not equate hitting a tire with a sledge to lifting weights but it is a good exercise with a resistance component.

rip Insanity off the internet. no equipment needed.

Between being (essentially) a single parent, having a full time job, and kids with full time activities, getting to the gym was becoming very cumbersome. So I got on Craigslist and Amazon and pieced a little weight room together that now lives in my basement. I think using what you have is a good start but eventually you will need more "things" to lift as you progress.

I have pretty much all the weights at home I need. If I need more, which would necessitate getting a stronger olympic bar, I can always purchase them. Basically for the price of what I saved on gym memberships I have my own weights, power cage, benches and powerblock dumbbells and don't have to spend any more.

In terms of answering your question. Both work, and don't think that you don't need structure for what your BF suggested. It is just different. The real question is which one will you stick to?

^^ I agree! I really can't stand to go to the gym for several reasons.

Many times over the years I've joined gyms and never used them consistently and a few times was stuck paying out a contract for gym fees that I never used.

We have a 250 lb home gym, a treadmill and various dvd's. We also use wii fit with the balance board to mix things up occasionally. My daughter has an xbox and I got her a Nike fitness program for Christmas, she's almost 15 and used it for the first time last week and told me she is "out of shape"!!! I may try that too!

Honestly, I love going to the gym and hitting the weight room...but if I were in your position and budget was tight and out of work, etc the gym would be just about the last thing I would do. I would definitely improvise with stuff you mentioned and I'd also probably just do a lot of body weight type of stuff..."You are Your Own Gym" is fairly awesome...if I didn't have access to or could afford the gym, that would be the program I would be doing.

I think I'll looking into dvd's (from the internet ofc lol) and such I can do inside my house. I'm really not one to make a fool of myself out in my front yard. I'm looking up the "You are your own gym."
