Hi Everyone,
I am going to be traveling from Miami to Colorado (Summit County, near Silverthorne) and need some advice.
1) Is it worth trying to ski? I have never done it before and lift tickets + Ski school=Expensive. Can this be done in 2 days? Are there any places in Summit County that might be more affordable?
2) Any suggestions on what to pack? I have never experienced this type of cold before!
3) We will be renting an SUV from the airport and will drive an hour and a half. We've never driven in snow before. Any suggestions on staying safe?
Any advice you could provide to this newbie would really be appreciated. Also, if you have any suggestions for activities, places to visit, or places to eat that would be great.

Skiing is something I think everyone should do at least once while their knees are still good. It's an awesome feeling once you stop falling down.
When I went skiing after becoming used to California temperatures, I was very unprepared and ended up needing to purchase wool socks and "real" hat/scarf/gloves. Boots and bib I just rented. Thermal layers will be helpful.
Driving on snow...check into chains to see if they would be allowed/useful and drive cautiously...bridges, going around corners, and places off the main road will be the worst. Don't park on hills if you can help it.
Have a great time!!!!0 -
As an avid skier and resident of Summit County, I can only say YES, give it a try. You won't get too far in just two days, but that will let you know if you want to keep at it. Call for pricing at the different areas to see who maybe has a deal for first timers.
In terms of what to pack, it won't seem as cold as you think it will because the air is dry. Layers are good. A polyester or poly wool turtle neck, a sweater and a light parka on top. I ski in yoga pants with a waterproof layer over the top. Do not ski in heavy socks, they do not keep your feet warm, just make it easier for the ski boots to squish them. Sometimes I even just ski in knee highs to let my feet slide in easier. Do consider foot warmers if your feet get cold.
