Best exercise in combination with Paleo?

Hey everyone!

I'm at a normal weight considering my height and age, BUT I'm "skinny fat" :/ It is nooot pretty.. I'm giving myself about 6 months to get into shape, which is a lot of time!

My goal is to lose inches, I'm not too concerned about my weight in numbers. I'm starting the Paleo diet tomorrow, what would be the best exercise I could do in combination with the diet that would help me cut down inches? Most people suggest that I should avoid intense cardio.

Any advice?

Many thanks!

Look at Mark's Daily Apple.com for a good idea of a healthy approach to exercise on a Paleo diet. He explains it better than anyone on this site could.

If it's inches, look into Lifting Heavy. Otherwise, any exercise that you'll enjoy and stick to works just fine.

Cardio is about building stamina, working your heart muscle, and burning calories. Cardio helps you with your DEFICIT...this "can" help you lose inches, because you lose weight.

Strength training (while in a deficit) is about KEEPING the muscle you have. Eat enough protein, strength train, and don't have an agressive weekly weight loss goal & you can keep most of the muscle you now have.

To gain muscle, you (likely) need to eat above maintenance, eat lots of protein & strength train.

I have lots of flab, and I'm pretty sure no muscle or very little. Does gaining muscle = loosing inches?

Thank you all for the advice!

The muscle you have is under the flab. Everyone has some muscle, it's what allows you to sit upright, stand, walk, etc. So just losing weight will help you lose inches.

Losing "weight" is about calorie deficit......the reason I say "weight" is that people who try to lose weight really fast (or don't strength train, or don't eat enough protein) can lose muscle along with fat. People who crash diet, or do no exercise often look like a smaller (still flabby) version of the body they had when they started dieting.

Gaining muscle is a lot of hard work ...so my advice is to focus on "keeping" muscle while on a diet. This will allow you to still lose flab. Then you can "see" how much muscle you really want to add.

Gaining muscle does not equal losing inches. But muscle is very compact (dense) .....fat is the opposite. So two people can weigh the same......but the musclular person has smaller measurements than the person with a higher fat %.
