Counterintuitive on the Gym Machines...

When you hop on the machine and it takes your heart rate...those lovely lights light up. Because I am so overweight, my heart rate goes high naturally. So the lights on the machine say that my heart rate is above the "weight loss" zone and even above the "cardio training" zone...and I'm not doing that much. It's not like I'm out of breath or dizzy or anything...so please tell me I'm not crazy to ignore the fact that my HR is "high". My HR was easily 140-150.

What is your age? If you prefer, search a target heart rate calculator. Generally the formula is 220-your age then go up to 85% of that # for your high target rate. If you go too high, it strains your heart and does more harm than good.

if you're new to exercise then dont worry about zones are heart rate (actually never worry about zones). just find a level that you can do from start to finish so you develop the habit of exercise.

at this stage what's important is just developing he habit and finding out your base level of fitness that you can build upon. if you can sustain 140-150 heart rate for 30-45 minutes then keep going. if you can't then slow down

and those 220-age formula are pretty much useless because they work on an average. a 29 year old athlete, a 29 year old person who moderately exercises and 29 year old person who's sedentary should all be working towards the same heart rate
