1 year of dieting

Well, it's been a year of dieting so far. I've managed to keep off the 20 pounds. I planned on losing more weight of course, but managing to stay afloat was better than nothing. I'm gonna try harder this year to get into shape.

Congratulations on maintaining. I fear the first year after the weight loss more than I fear the dentist. Thank you for the inspiration. I needed it today.

This post concerns me. Mostly because of the thinking behind it. Ultimately one of the lessons I would hope people would take away from MFP would be that dieting is a losing proposition. The best way to maintain a healthy body is to change how we eat permanently, and to lose weight, all you do is adjust the portion sizes of your meals. Thinking of it as a "diet", and by that I mean the "I'm on a diet" definition, means that you're thinking about ending it eventually. this is just MHO but I feel that the best way to maintain after you reach a goal, is to make as few changes as possible, that means not changing what we eat, just adding a little extra portion sizes to existing nutrition. This has 2 benefits, 1st is psychological, since we aren't changing what we eat, you don't have a change in mind set, and the second is physical, when ever you change the types of nutrients you eat, your body goes through an adjustment period where weight gain is far more likely.
