Dirty Girl Mud Run 5K Advice

My wife and I have decided to do the Dirty Girl Mud Run 5K in Raleigh, NC this coming May. Neither of us have ever done a mud run of any kind and I need advice from people that have. What should we wear? What type of shoes are best? What exercises do you recommend to get us prepared? I know things are going to be very different from a normal 5K because of the mud, water & obstacles so I want to be as ready as I can be.
Also, if you are in the Raleigh area and plan on doing this event as well I would love to hear from you!! Or if you just happen to be in the Carolinas and want a new friend message me!
Thanks in advance for your help & advice!!

Hello,
I have done this run, it was actually my first one & it was amazing. A great experience. I read some articles & followed the advice I found, compression gear is best as cotton only weigh you down & the bottoms may fall off, compression is your BFF. I purchased a pair of running shoes from Marshall’s for about $30 & donated them in the end. I did not use my good every day running shoes, now that I have a new pair of my favorite running shoe I will retire my old ones & use them for the next mud run.
As far as training when I first signed up I had 0 running experience, so I completed the C25K trainer & went from 0 running to 4 miles in only 8 weeks, so I was ready for the run. As far as strength I lifted free weights about 2-3 x-s a week, but this run is really great for a first time mud run, the obstacles are sometimes hard (like the wall climb) but doable w/great people cheering you on. I didn’t have to go around any obstacles, but if I had to there would have been no shame as they really make you feel that you can do anything regardless of skill level. They warm you up before the start w/some fun Zumba moves & off you go. There are many many walkers, so if you can’t run it then don’t. Bring a plastic bag to put in your wet muddy clothes and/or shoes if you choose to keep them as well as a towel to dry off with. There is a large enclosed tent w/communal showers (hoses placed @ intervals) were you rinse off afterwards & get dressed. I brought some flip flops to wear as I rinsed off. Don’t forget to bring fresh under garments. You can then use your free beer ticket to enjoy one if you choose to. If you have long hair braiding it is good.
You will get mud everywhere & I do mean everywhere on your body. Don’t stress too much about this run as it really isn’t hard core, it’s about having fun & challenging yourself. I have already signed up for this year’s Dirty Girl in October & will be doing a Rugged Maniac mud & obstacle course in May. These mud runs are addicting as they are dirty. I hope this info helps.
Long story short:
1) Compression pants & shirt (don’t forget the sports bra)
2) Plastic bag
3) Towel
4) Sun Block
5) Flipflops
6) Fresh pair of shoes & socks
7) Fresh undergarments
8) A great attitude
I’m sorry if I forgot anything. Have lots of fun.0 -
