is it okay to workout extra hard (double) the day after a day off? or does it really defeat the purpose of resting?

You identify it yourself. Your rest days have a purpose.

I assume that you're a recent start, so your rest days are particularly important in giving your system time to adapt to the stresses you're putting on it.

You don't want to fall into the trap of doing "double" just to make up for a rest day as the rest day is important. Overload/Recover equals results. That being said there's no reason not to up the intensity (rather than volume) IF you feel sufficiently rested and energised.

I'm 6 weeks into Insanity and have learnt to make the most of the days when I feel energised and really push myself harder than ever. On the days when it's a struggle then I'll get through as best I can but recognise it's not going to be eyeballs out!

Listen to your body but don't set out with a mindset to burn double the calories just to make up for yesterday.

    Hope that makes sense...
