Hi all,
Hope all is going well with the weight loss, I'm doing my best there too...
If some of you were hoping to take up running in order to get fit then I might have a few suggestions & give you some of my experiences.
Firstly I wasn't that guy at school that was great at every sport...quite the opposit, where running came into it...well lets just say I was always last & leave it at that.
But...
Now I'm almost 34 & have been running a few times a week for a year now. I joined a local running club & found that there were people of my ability or lack of ability to start with & I made some great friends there.
A running club is a great place to get advice, especially if you've got an injury, someone will always recommend a streching exercise or physio.
I had in the past done a little running (on my own) and managed from no running to running 8 miles every morning but I slowly stopped & let the weight creep up again. That was annoying after putting in such effort every day.
My aim was to run my first ever marathon this year ( I had never run over 8 miles before) and I'm proud to say I ran my first in July, a second in August and I'm doing the Dublin City Marathon, Ireland in October.
I followed a routine & this kept me motivated.
Your aim should be to run a 5k or 10k early next year, there should be loads of them & follow the start guide on www.32marathons.com, click on the training tab & see the list on that page.
Like loosing weight, if you don't have an aim then how can you achieve your goal. If you have a friend to join you then it will be much easier and far more enjoyable.
I used the 32 marathons training simply because that was the charity I was running for, you can also read how two Irish men ran 32 marathons in 32 days back to back on this site.
Lastly bring a watch with you to time your runs, how else will you know how well you are improving, nothing more rewarding than taking a few minutes off the same run.
Hope this help and enjoy..
Colin

Thanks for the link.
I'm currently doing the Couch to 5K. I've never been much of a runner, but yes, I want to get fit although it's rather difficult as I get out of breath quite easily due to my high blood pressure which my doctor says I will have to take medication for the rest of my life due to other medical issues.
But regardless, I want to try and do a half marathon next year! That would be an amazing achievement for me, or to even be able to have the endurance to do a 5K. I would be extremely happy!0 -
My boyfriend would love it if I ran with him, he even bought me running shoes in January. I've always used the excuse "I'm a cyclist, not a runner" but I might just give couch to 5k a go. Another concern I have always had is that running doesn't burn as much calories as other exercise. Either way, being out and about with nature must be amazing!0

When you "bump" and post on a topic, it saves it to your topics so you can review it again later.0 -
Ah thanks for clearing that up, you learn something new every day...0
