Couch to 10k in 9 weeks?

I haven't a lot of weight to lose - probably around 7-14lbs more. I have a BMI just within healthy range. I go to fitness classes 3 x per week (but only lighthearted stuff like cardio and zumba). I've read a lot on this site about "maintaining" and everyone here says that when you reach your goal weight, you need to set new goals for yourself other than losing weight. I live in a beautiful part of the world and it seems a shame to do all my exercise indoors at the gym. I want to run. There is an organised 10km run right in my town on March 16th. Should I do it?

Here are my reservations:
- I haven't run before - is it just silly to try to get up to a 10km in only 9 weeks (C25K suggests 9 weeks to get up to 5k)
- I'm not naturally a good runner. Even when I was sporty in my teens, I was always better at strength and speed than endurance/stamina
- I'm REALLY scared of failing/embarrassing myself with a poor performance/not finishing.
- I don't like exercising in public, so am worried about my training - especially if I have to stop every 20 seconds to walk cos I can't run for any longer.

I KNOW I am being pathetic and there are people out there who weigh twice as much as me who have completed marathons and triathalons and all sorts of fantastic things like that. But right now, I'm just a very average person needing advice from people who have already been there. Shall I sign up to this 10k?

Well - thanks for the overwhelming support everyone!

Maybe radio silence was the best thing for me. After all - running is going to be just me and the road! I've signed up. Let's see how I get on!
