I want to lose 5 lbs, maybe more

...so I decided to lower my daily food intake by 1000 calories. It's a perfectly safe thing to do, cause I've been overeating every single day for some time now. Should I do it gradually? What works best for you? My weight is normal, but I'd like to slim down a bit.
