what is cardio

Ive started a quest. 3 days into it. Im watching what I eat and exercising. Treadmill about 3.5mph 45min a day heart rate in 140-150 range. Ive mixed in some light weight lifting reps. Weight is 242 age is 32. Now just what is cardio? My goal is to lose weight I'm focused on the first 10lbs just to prove to myself I can do it but really would like to lose about 50.

You're doing cardio when you get on the treadmill...you're doing something that raises your heart rate and (should) improve your cardiovascular fitness...

cardio is a term people use for cardiovascular exercise. commonly it is non-strength training exercises such as walking, running, swimming, cycling, etc etc.

however, if done at a high pace, certain strength training can be considered cardio.

Yep, cardio is what gets your heart rate up for an extended period of time. Strength training is something that is more focused on strengthening and toning muscles (like weight lifting)
Circuit training tends to be both. Often people focus only on cardio, but developing muscle is a huge boost to losing weight, so it's great that your doing both!

This is a good overview of cardio and some information about it.

  • Cardio is like treadmill, running, swimming, bicycling, etc..

But, just in case it's what you're talking about.... Cardio "work-out" is generally considered ~60% of your heart rate maintained. Fat loss is ~80%.

220 minus (-) your age, is your max heart rate. So, 220-32= 188, cardio would be 112 approx., and fat burn would be around 150.
