Run walk run method

Anyone try Jeff Galloway's run walk run method? I just picked up the book and am thinking of trying it out :)

That is the method that I used to start running 4 years ago. Great programme!

I haven't, but the Couch 2 5k program is kind of like that...my first week I thought I'd die...I can actually run for a full 2 minutes now...haha!

Did it throuh my half marathon, and will continue to do it when needed. I love run/walk/run...allows you to save energy for when you truly need it later on in a run or race.

Thats the only way I run...I just have no desire to run nonstop. I'll be training for a half and full marathon using his methods.

I used this a lot of the beginning of my program and when I am on the treadmill that is the only way that I run. When I run outside now- I can run 5-6 miles without stopping if I keep a good pace and working myself up to more =)

Just started running 8 weeks ago and doing amazing following a program similar!

I have read a couple of his books and have implemented the run/walk/run method and it really does help. You do save energy and it helps to let your sore muscles get a little recovery in with each walk break.

When I first started running 10k I always struggled to break the 1 hour mark. Then I heard about this method, tried it and instantly my time dropped by a few minutes so my normal 10k time became about 55min instead.

It's a great idea. I've gone back to just running without stopping now because it's too cold but once the weather warms up again (I'm a wimp!) I plan to go back to intervals and increase my distance.

One thing I found though is that if you're going to use it in races you have to really mentally steel yourself to stop after the first interval. I always find that hard when there's all the atmosphere and adrenaline but it's no good training like this and then totally changing things up in a race just because you get over excited!
  • If you're new to running or run marathons, this is definitely the way to go. Run/walk/run is awesome!

It's awesome to know that so many people swear by it! I was a former runner and started something similar but then grew to believe I had to push myself nonstop with as little walk breaks as possible. I then got the word that I had IT band syndrome... I threw myself on the bench for running after that. I started tonight at the indoor track with the 1 min run, 1 min walk and seemed to enjoy it!

If anyone wants a virtual run walk run buddy to share triumphs with, send me a friend request :) I'm looking for company!

I've done two full marathons and about 10 halves and I use the run/walk method. When you are really tired, it is nice to see that you only have a few more minutes of running until you get a walk break. It really helps you mentally! For my shorter runs, I just run and for the longer ones I run/walk.
