Protecting damage to knees whilst doing cardio

I'm very unfit but have been doing low impact cardio for 30 mins per day. My knees crunch and grind and now feel sore. Any ideas, apart from swimming regarding exercise? Would an elasticated support help? I'm53 and have no obvious arthritus. I'm about 20 pounds overweight.
