Numbers games

I started out this year sick, which inevitably cut into my exercise intentions. I also lost a fair bit of weight from being sick, which helps push the motivation to keep in that direction. I've also been trying to hold onto the lessened appetite from being sick.
Being that I haven't gotten back to exercising like I used to yet, I think I've been a tad paranoid about my calorie budgeting, and therefore holding on a bit too much so I can 'indulge' come dinner time.
I think some of the estimates are off since some of the food I've been eating is at restaurants not in the database, but a couple days I seem to be coming up pretty low. I just had dinner that seemed fairly large I thought, but right now I'm sitting at having eaten an estimated 675-850 calories. I'm gonna go after a bit more, but I'm surprised that my body's playing along and not yelling at me too much from holding off on eating earlier in the day.
I can see how this is a tempting path for people to take, and I also know it's not necessarily healthy. I'm hoping getting back to the exercise routine I'd like will help (probably routine in general after the holidays) but any tips to not get caught in the numbers deficit game? It's weird to say but I almost miss the days of negotiating a few more miles on the run in order to create room for froyo in the evening..
