A set exercise programme or workout variety??

Do you think that sticking to a set programme of exercise is more beneficial than varying workouts day to day?
I work out at home 5/6 days a week using mainly dvds, and youtube. I also have a treadmill and elliptical. I find I get bored if I follow the same dvd for a period of time i.e. 30DS so I find I just do whatever I feel like each day. I may have a week of cardio then a couple of days yoga, then a day on the treadmill etc etc.
Because I'm working towards a general fitness and feel/look better goal I think variation is ok. Obviously if I wanted to achieve a particular goal I know I would have to have a more specific plan.
Would welcome your input and any advice.
