Is there such a thing as too much vitamins...

Over the weekend a friend of mine saw that I was eating Gerber Rice Baby Cereal for breakfast. I usually eat this during the work week in place of Oatmeal as I have a gluten allergy. Anyways she said to me that there are a ton of vitamins in Gerber baby food and while it was good for growing babies is it really good for adult to have that much? I also take daily vitamins such B12, Fish Oil & Flax seed oil and Cholestoff (I high cholesterol) Vitamin D, Ginkgo Biloba. All in which my Dr. is aware as she suggested them. Am I over dosing (lol) on Vitamins by eating the Gerber Rice Baby Cereal?

I will obviously consult my dr. but I don't see her for a few months so i figured I see what the good people of MFP thought of the "too much vitamins".

Have a great one!

The body can only process so much of any vitamin or mineral, and any excess is generally just peed out, as far as I know. There are rare cases where someone has had so much that it poisoned them, but I doubt you're at that level.

Thanks! That was my thought as well and lord knows I drink enough water each day to fill a small pool ; ) :drinker:

There are a few vitamins that you can overdose on, they are the fat-soluble vitamins for the most part (Vitamins A, E and Vitamin K come to mind) but you're not going to get a toxic dose from baby cereal even if you are getting a fair bit from other sources. The other poster is correct that most vitamins and minerals in excess are just peed out, but those are the water-soluble vitamins/minerals (C, Bs, magnesium, etc). Additionally you kind of have to try pretty hard to get enough of the fat-soluble ones to cause a problem.

Yes, you can overdose on vitamins, and even taking too many of the water-soluble ones can cause problems (too much vitamin C can cause diarrhea). Whether or not you'll OD from baby cereal is debatable, but vitamin overdose is real.

WOW... that's alot of good information. Who would have though vitamins could have that kind of affect on people. Thankfully, I never take more than the daily dosages on the ones I take daily. I am only eating the cereal for breakfast so I would like to think I'm not putting too many into my system?

Thanks for the feed back Evileen, much appreciated! :flowerforyou:

Don't forget you're getting vitamins in the food you eat too so if you have 100% RDA in the pills you'll go over with food.

Wherever possible, get vitamins and minerals from food sources as they are better absorbed and used by the body in their natural state.
