i know this post has been done to death...even if someone knows of a good previous post on the subject they wouldn't mind referencing, that would help.

Weight can fluctuate wildly due to hormone levels (TOM), sodium, fluid retention, glycogen in the muscles. Many different things. Don't stress! Eat to goal and continue being active and everything will fall into place! This process is not a linear one

Either skip your weigh-in while these fluctuations are making you heavier, or weigh every day and plot a graph (you'll need to stick with it over a couple of months) to remind yourself that there will be daily fluctuations, but all that matters is there is an overall downwards trend :flowerforyou:

OP, thanks. I needed this today, too!
  • I have a reminder of this written in my journal because I ALWAYS get down on myself because of weight fluctuations. I'm the kind of person who weighs themselves COMPULSIVELY every day when I know I shouldn't...that's not good either!! :)

I feel the same way. Lost 2 lbs since Christmas and over the course of the weekend, TOM, coupled with bad eating, high sodium foods and I'm back up to my original weight.

I really hope it is just a fluctuation based on those factors and not that I really gained 2 lbs over the weekend.

I'm the same hormones and weight gain do not mix well.

This month I did my maths all wrong with my TOM timing so when I got on the scales yesterday and had put on about a kg despite eating at an deficit and exercising well I was so fed up. Felt bloated, horrible and completely pathetic.

Today the weight has dropped a little and I have the explanation, so now I just feel bloated and horrible.

Circuits session today helped, wish I could bottle those exercise endorphins :)

I weigh daily and my numbers are up and down every single time. I can swing up or down as much as 5lbs in a week - but it's not a big deal, my clothes fit the same no matter what the number on the scale. It's not a fat gain or loss, but as you said, those normal fluctuations.

The tape measure is your friend - start tracking your measurements along with weight, or weigh less often if the numbers drive you mad.

You know how you can track "additional measurements" on MFP?

Try making one called "Weight Fluctuations." Record the weird day-to-day up/down changes there (if you're weighing day-to-day, or even once a week).

The next time you're feeling like this, go look at the chart tracking the progress. The insane up and down spikes will hopefully reassure you, "Wait, this has happened before... and I'm okay." It's helped me with my similar anxieties.

My weight fluctuates between 2-28 pounds, depending on my motivation and life stress levels.

Even as a guy, I have had daily weight fluctuations as high as 6 pounds...and frequently see swings of 2-4 pounds for no apparent reason. Day-to-day, the numbers are all over the place...and yet, looking back at averages, it all resolves to a nice smooth line, direction depending on whether I was eating under or over maintenance. (Note, this is not an argument to weight less often because the fluctuation can still be hidden in those numbers too...and will take even longer for the line to smooth given that you have fewer data points.)

If you are logging your food you can be confident in knowing where the gain is coming from. Unless you ate an extra 3500 calories you didn't gain a pound of fat. It will be water or waste. Monthly cycles, extra sodium, new workouts that stress the muscles will all have you retaining water that will flush naturally. If you are within your regular caloric intake then the least likely culprit is body fat. Enjoy the whoosh loss in a few days.

    When I cut, I gain weight ~3 days/week. When I bulk, I lose weight ~ 3 days/week.

I use weightgrapher. It shows the ups and downs as well as the general trend of weight loss. This might help with the day to day fluctuations.

I use "True Weight" app on my iPhone. It also shows ups and downs and trends. I find it helps keep me grounded.
