Teen Mom series...Good or Bad??

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/13/business/media/mtvs-16-and-pregnant-derided-by-some-may-resonate-as-a-cautionary-tale.html?partner=yahoofinance&_r=0

Do you think these shows glamorized being a teen parent or actually showed the difficulties that go along with being a teen mom? As a teen mom myself, I saw more of the struggles that these girls went through. I could relate to a lot of the things they were going through. I would like to think it made people (teens mainly) realize the hardships that go along with having children without an education or even the means of taking care of the child as well as the reality of the likelihood that the father will stay around. What do you think?

  • Bad bad bad. I've said since this show was first born that is glorifies teen pregnancy. It in no way paints the issue in a bad light. Teens are very impressionable and this show is a travesty. MTV should be ashamed.

I was subjected to this programming a quite a few times. From what I saw it was nothing out of the warped reality that the majority of today's youth has established as "acceptable". I wouldn't say it "glorified" teen pregnancy, but it sure as hell didn't make it look like a big deal either. I really wish the show would have focused on the financial aspect in respect to, income, cost, outside help from family/friends/public aid, etc etc etc. (real numbers that can't be slighted)

My Daughter is only two now, but by the time she is a teen I'm sure MTV (or maybe VH1) will have had a "Where are they now?" reunion show. Just judging by the complete downward spiral of the majority of the cast, it should prove to be a solid example of what not to do.

I don't think they really show the hardships of being a teen mom. I wouldn't say they glamorize it but I also wouldn't say they discourage it.

I've watched a lot of the 16 and Pregnant episodes only because my daughter enjoys them, and we've had the conversation a hundred times over - she knows that it's better to not get preggers as a teen than it would be to.

The only question I ever had was where were the parents of the boys? Why weren't they pushing them to be more involved?

There were a few, but an actual teenage boy and girl with strong family support to help them wouldn't make good TV. I'm sure the casting gunned for unstable teenage girls with dysfunctional families and baby daddies (and his parents) who didn't want to be ostracized by the viewing public who believe whatever opinion was scripted.

I always wondered why Chelsea was cast. Maybe because her baby daddy wasn't in the picture. But that girl had rent paid for her and never worked and lived nicely because her parents paid for everything.

    TV is entertainment.

Even so called reality shows have video editing and are set up for sensationalistic effect.

Teenage parenthood is stressful and not glamorous.

I watched it once, and wondered why dysfunction is so glamorized in America.
