Hi

I manage to do well all day long but for some reason when it gets to 8pm I just want to eat! Mostly everything I shouldn't eat. My wifes passion in life is baking, and she is very good at it. Im not sure if its boredom thats the problem or something else. Yes, I know its a lack of self control!

Any tips from those who have done battle with the night munchies?

Trevor

I just don't battle it! After so many attempts in the past to eliminate things I love, this time around (over 2 years ago) I knew I couldn't do it again....so I identified things that I knew were triggers. One of those things is a night time snack and I have had one every night for over 2 years and have still been successful  just leave some calories for a snack at 8pm, eat only the calories you have left and you will be fine!

If you are eating your wife's baking though, I would suggest putting the recipes into the MFP recipe builder so that you do have an accurate calorie count. It's so easy to not track that stuff properly....and I'm sure it's delicious!

    Good luck!

Some people do good with restricting themselves to nothing after supper, or only a small snack after supper but nothing after 8/9 pm. I tried it and it didn't work for me. My sleeping patterns suffered and as soon as I had a handful of crackers before bed, I slept like a baby. Obviously that's not how everyone works, but it's an example of how "nighttime munchies" aren't necessarily evil. But if you're determined to not eat at night, talk to your wife. A lot of people eat simply because it's there, so if those cookies or cakes or whatever are tempting you, and there's really no reason they're there besides it's her passion, ask her to maybe cut back on making things to keep in the house. Or to make something healthier so you won't feel guilty. Baking doesn't have to be about indulgence, after all.

I've dealt with it two ways, the first I just saved 300 or 400 calories so I could have snacks at night. The second I stopped eating after dinner and went hungry for about three days. After that my body reset its hunger cues and now I don't get hungry at night anymore -- unless I'm really hungry, of course. I prefer the second way; it's much easier to stick to my diet without the constant snacking.
