Working Out, Post-Hernia

Anybody have experience working out, specifically doing any kind of resistance training, post hernia-surgery? I have lost 18 pounds through diet and cardio, but I am still unhappy with my 'skinny-fat' body (as I type this, I am hyper-conscious of the way my belly hangs over my pants, ew). However, literally every time I lift even just 15 pounds, I feel it where I had my surgery. My doctor tells me to do what I can do, as long as it doesn't hurt, which seems to mean 'nothing' now, but I have to imagine there's somebody with this similar experience who can at least lend some recommendations? Thanks! Feel free to glance at my profile pics for any advice on specific muscle groups/exercises I could focus on.

Time and water, you can make your abs stronger but the skinny fat look goes away when the extra skin goes away, and that can take two years.0
