I'm just curious about this because I always thought that heavy lifting would make you bulky and that's definitely not what I want to achieve. But I've seen some before and after pictures of women that are on a heavy lifting regimen and they look super fit and tone. Not bulky at all.
So I'm kind of curious about this and I'd like to know how to get started. What programs/workouts to do? All that jazz.

Read "New Rules of Lifting for Women" - it explains the whole shebang.

Bulking up requires a calorie surplus, and also the genetic capacity to get bulky - which most women lack.

    This.

Even if you don't do that program, it's a great straightforward explanation for why women tend to go about working out all wrong.

I know you've seen pictures, but this thread was one that inspired me to start lifting. There's tons of bulky women in this thread: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/977538-halp-heavy-lifting-made-me-supah-bulky?hl=lifting+made+me+bulky
  • Try starting small and simple.

I like bodybuilding.com for the exercises and videos on how to do it properly. Also you can search for muscle group and what equipment you have.

Just don't get turned off by the site since it caters to professional bodybuilders. A lot of the information there is good.
  • Those freaky - man shoulder type women you talk about are on some serious hormones. You will not look like them by lifting weights.
